SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. \u2013 Two Seminole County cities are moving to finalize their upcoming budgets as uncertainty lingers around the potential impact of Amendment 3.<\/p>\n
Leaders in Oviedo and Longwood will vote Monday on millage rates for each city\u2019s budget, which takes effect Oct. 1.<\/p>\n
Oviedo previously considered cutting city-sponsored events and programs as a cost-saving measure, but there is currently no plan to move forward with those cuts. The proposed millage rate for Oviedo would see no increase, remaining at 5.6692 mills.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s going to be a zero percent increase in the amount of money being collected by the city of Oviedo this year,\u201d Mayor Megan Sladek said at a meeting earlier this month. \u201cSo, we are tightening our belts in response to the increasing costs.\u201d<\/p>\n
In Longwood, city leaders will vote on a 5.78% tax-rate increase over the rollback rate \u2014 though the millage will not exceed the rate set more than a decade ago. Part of the funding includes continued construction planning for Fire Station 15, water improvement projects and a 4% salary increase for non-union employees.<\/p>\n
Leaders in both cities have raised concerns about a potential decrease in funding if Amendment 3 passes. The proposed constitutional amendment would increase the homestead exemption for a primary residence from approximately $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. The measure requires 60% voter approval in November to pass.<\/p>\n
Longwood and Oviedo will vote to approve their budgets during meetings Monday evening.<\/p>\n
