PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 A confrontation in a Port St. Lucie Pollo Tropical <\/a>parking lot ended with a man shot in the chest and later facing charges.<\/p>\n

Around 3:43 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, officers with the Port St. Lucie Police Department<\/a> responded to the Pollo Tropical at 1635 NW St. Lucie West Blvd. for reports of a shooting. Officers found the suspect, Christopher Harris, suffering from a single gunshot wound to his chest. <\/p>\n

Police say Harris was armed with a knife and shot after starting an argument with another man over a parking space. <\/p>\n

Shoppers were surprised to hear about the violence at the busy shopping plaza, especially in the middle of the day. <\/p>\n

“Wow. That’s a horrible story to hear,” said Sharon Osceola of Okeechobee. “It’s a nice neighborhood. You don’t ever see any confrontations happening in this area.”<\/p>\n

The shooting led to a heavy law enforcement investigation outside the business<\/a>, with crime scene tape around the restaurant. <\/p>\n

The other person involved, identified as Isaiah Davis, 25, was detained at the scene while officers investigated. Police also recovered and secured a firearm. Investigators say Davis shot Harris in self-defense. <\/p>\n

PSLPD said interviews and surveillance video from the restaurant showed the confrontation between Harris and Davis began after the two men had an interaction in the parking lot.<\/p>\n

Davis entered the restaurant to pick up a delivery order, and Harris followed him inside despite not appearing to place or pick up an order, police said. When Davis left the restaurant, Harris allegedly followed him outside.<\/p>\n

Police said surveillance video showed Harris, who was armed with a knife, push Davis and then advance toward him as Davis backed away. Davis then pulled out a gun and fired one round, striking Harris in the upper torso, according to PSLPD.<\/p>\n

Harris returned to the restaurant, where people began rendering aid and called 911.<\/p>\n

During the investigation, officers recovered one knife from Harris’ waistband while aid was being provided and another from his front pocket, police said. Harris was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n

Based on surveillance video, witness statements and other evidence, detectives determined Harris was the primary aggressor, according to PSLPD. He was charged with attempted aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and felony battery based on a prior battery conviction.<\/p>\n

“Being here for so long, you just never had a lot of crime here,” said Angel Vazquez of Port St. Lucie. “It’s shocking but it is getting a little crazy here in this city here.”<\/p>\n

Police said Harris was booked into the St. Lucie County Jail on Sunday after he was treated and released from the hospital.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.
