{"id":407273,"date":"2026-09-22T15:24:22","date_gmt":"2026-09-22T15:24:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/407273\/"},"modified":"2026-09-22T15:24:22","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T15:24:22","slug":"florida-election-2026-includes-st-lucie-county-sales-tax-renewal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/407273\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida election 2026 includes St. Lucie County sales tax renewal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">St. Lucie County voters will decide whether to renew a <a data-ylk=\"slk:half-cent sales tax;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tcpalm.com\/story\/news\/local\/st-lucie-county\/2026\/02\/25\/st-lucie-county-sales-tax-renewal-for-port-st-lucie-fort-pierce-treasure-coast-florida\/88719671007\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">half-cent sales tax<\/a> that expires in 2028, which funds multimillion-dollar infrastructure projects for roads, sidewalks and drainage improvements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Government officials urge voters to renew the sales tax, which St. Lucie County officials estimate will generate about $378 million until it expires in 2038 for:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">St. Lucie County: $181.8 million<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Port St. Lucie: $163.2 million<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fort Pierce: $32.1 million<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">St. Lucie Village: $400,000<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Port St. Lucie expected to spend $120 million widening St. Lucie West Boulevard and about $32 million resurfacing city streets, among other projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The infrastructure needs in the city are not going away,&#8221; city spokesperson Scott Samples told TCPalm. &#8220;There is still a large demand for this funding to continue building better roads, more sidewalks and cleaner rivers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Voters passed the sales tax in a 2018 referendum with over 55% of the vote. It initially failed in 2016, as it received less than 47% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Uncertainty that voters will pass the 2026 referendum led city and county officials to put it on the Nov. 3 ballot \u2014 <a data-ylk=\"slk:one election cycle earlier;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tcpalm.com\/story\/news\/local\/st-lucie-county\/2026\/02\/25\/st-lucie-county-sales-tax-renewal-for-port-st-lucie-fort-pierce-treasure-coast-florida\/88719671007\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">one election cycle earlier<\/a> than needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Extending the half-cent sales tax keeps investing in our community without putting the entire burden on local residents,&#8221; county spokesperson Erick Gill told TCPalm. &#8220;It asks everyone who uses our resources, including tourists and visitors, to fund critical improvements for safer roads.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The sales tax will not apply to purchases of gas, groceries or medicine, according to the county&#8217;s online <a data-ylk=\"slk:fact sheet;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/slchalfcent.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">fact sheet<\/a>.
