Residents in Lee County, Florida, found that laughter was an effective way to push back against a proposed rewrite of local growth rules.<\/p>\n
That ridicule, paired with organized public pressure, helped persuade county leaders to pause a plan critics said would make it easier for developers to weaken community protections and avoid public scrutiny, according to FlaglerLive<\/a>.<\/p>\n Here’s what to know<\/p>\n At issue was the Lee Plan, the county’s long-term development guide. During an Aug. 25 meeting at the North Fort Myers Rec Center, residents laughed repeatedly as planners framed the proposed revisions as a way to streamline the process.<\/p>\n The sharpest response came after attendees were told that developers could seek changes to parts of the plan without being required to hold a public hearing.<\/p>\n Nadine Slimak, a Bokeelia public relations expert who became one of the proposal’s most prominent opponents, said the process seemed set up to make it hard for the public to follow.<\/p>\n “It’s so ridiculous,” Slimak said. “They were going to do this and not tell anybody about it.”<\/p>\n Residents were also troubled by how quickly the proposal appeared to be moving. Environmental activist Sue Dahod of Bokeelia said the notice “was done in such a way that nobody knew what it was.”<\/p>\n As criticism mounted, Commissioner Kevin Ruane, a former Sanibel mayor, moved on Sept. 2 to delay a planned vote until Oct. 7. Slimak helped form the Lee Communities Coalition, bringing together advocates from across the county in days. Dahod said Slimak “put it together in two business days and a weekend.”<\/p>\n The coalition then filled another advisory meeting and pushed back on the idea that community-specific protections were merely bureaucratic hurdles.<\/p>\n One North Fort Myers resident told the committee members: “I’m not anti-growth. I literally make my living selling real estate, but what I am against is stripping protections from established communities, calling it streamlining, and betting the public won’t read 334 pages.
