NC State’s former sports medicine director is in a Florida jail on dozens of sexual abuse charges out of North Carolina.<\/p>\n
More than 30 former Wolfpack athletes have accused Robert Michael Murphy, 54, of sexual abuse and misconduct in a civil lawsuit in state court. The athletes allege that Murphy often touched their genitals during treatments that didn\u2019t require it.<\/p>\n
The lawsuit also names several current and former athletics department staff accused of negligence.<\/p>\n
Murphy, who is facing 23 counts of felony sexual battery and 9 counts of felony
\nsexual contact, was arrested Thursday night and is being held in Marion County, Florida on out-of-state fugitive warrants from North Carolina.\u00a0WRAL News is working to learn when he will be
\nextradited to North Carolina.<\/p>\n
ESPN reports<\/a> the arrest comes after a grand jury indicted Murphy on the sex charges on Sept. 14. The charges were not made public until Murphy could be located.<\/p>\n Murphy served as NC State\u2019s director of sports medicine<\/a>\u00a0from January 2012 until June 2022 when he resigned. Murphy was suspended from his position in January 2022.<\/p>\n WRAL has been following the accusations<\/a> against Murphy for years since the first lawsuits alleging abuse were filed in 2023.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n Benjamin Locke<\/a>, a former NC State men\u2019s soccer player, filed the complaint in federal court in 2022. A second athlete joined in February 2023<\/a> and a third in April 2023<\/a>. An additional 14 athletes<\/a> joined the lawsuit in 2025. It has since expanded to 31 athletes<\/a>, almost all of them identified as John Doe.
