ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. \u2013 Altamonte Springs is weighing an upgrade to a pilot program that uses artificial intelligence to help make city streets smoother and safer.<\/p>\n
The city launched Road Triage technology from Robocist in 2025 as a more efficient, cost-effective way to identify and address road issues such as cracks and potholes.<\/p>\n
\u201cUsing technology, we\u2019re able to collect more data and we can pinpoint where we\u2019re seeing places that have some erosion in our asphalt, have some buckling in the asphalt, so we can prevent places where we otherwise would have potholes,\u201d City Manager Frank Martz said.<\/p>\n
The technology has already demonstrated significant cost savings. Previously, the city hired a company to manually assess 80 miles of roads at a cost of approximately $120,000. With Road Triage, sensors mounted on city vehicles collected the same data for just $3,500.<\/p>\n
\u201cTechnology, if used properly, is a great tool to save taxpayers money,\u201d Martz said.<\/p>\n
The system also has the potential to evaluate road conditions before and after storms, offering insight that could support quicker recovery and repair efforts.<\/p>\n
Martz has pointed to the pilot program as an example of how city leaders are building a smarter, more sustainable city by taking an innovative approach to infrastructure.<\/p>\n
After the pilot expired earlier this year, the city began exploring options for expanding the use of AI \u2014 not only to identify road problems, but also to initiate the repair process.<\/p>\n
\u201cUsing the technology to also issue the work order now has taken another step out of the process and allows us to save more and more taxpayer funds and get the same thing done, and in this case do it better,\u201d Martz said.<\/p>\n
