An alleged intruder who was fatally shot in Miami on Monday has been identified as a local DJ.

Miami Police on Wednesday identified the deceased as Melvin Díaz Cepeda.

According to police, officers responded at around 5 a.m. Monday to a property at 4606 Northwest 5th Avenue after receiving a report about a person who had allegedly entered without authorization.

Kenia Fallat, a spokesperson for Miami Police, said that “officers, along with Fire Rescue personnel, arrived at the scene, and firefighters pronounced the man, in his mid-40s, dead.”

Police did not provide further details about the circumstances of the shooting.

“Detectives are going door to door to see if there are any surveillance cameras that captured what happened, and we’re asking the public that if they know anything, to call us, but apparently, what it looks like is that he may have been an intruder,” Fallat said.

However, friends of Díaz Cepeda are asking authorities to continue their investigation because, according to them, the person who opened fire and the young man who was shot were DJs who knew each other.

NBC6 spoke with a woman who said she was friends with Díaz Cepeda.

“Nothing but a bright light in this community,” said Cristina Hernandez.

Hernandez said the story doesn’t make sense, and she’s searching for answers after someone shot and killed Díaz Cepeda.

“Some sort of disagreement,” she said.

She said her friend knew the person who shot him, but she doesn’t know the relationship they had.

“It is intolerable to have two people know each other and someone dead,” she said.

Diaz Cepeda is from the Dominican Republic and was a DJ who moved to the U.S. because of his love for music, Hernandez told NBC6.

She said she’s stayed in touch with Diaz’s mom, who also doesn’t believe her son would break into someone’s home.

“We are just very confused in the community right now as to why someone who is so passionate and positive and looking for a creative outlets as opposed to violence is gone,” She said.

Family and friends say they have so many questions, but ultimately, they want to know the truth.

Images captured by NBC6 that day showed a large police presence and rescue crews in the area. Video also showed a long-haired man in handcuffs as he was placed into a patrol car.

Authorities said one person was being questioned in connection with the incident, although it was not clear whether it was the same man seen in handcuffs in the images.

The home remained cordoned off as detectives collected evidence and tried to piece together the sequence of events.

A neighbor said she initially thought it was an accident and that she feels bad about the situation.

The investigation continues.
