Fort Lauderdale, FL – Fort Lauderdale has recorded its wettest September in more than a century after repeated storms brought unusually heavy rainfall to South Florida.<\/p>\n
Preliminary measurements at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport show more than 20 inches of rain fell during September 2026, breaking the previous monthly record before September ended.<\/p>\n
The former record was 18.40 inches, established in 1998. By the morning of September 23, the National Weather Service reported that 20.75 inches had been measured at the airport.<\/p>\n
Fort Lauderdale normally receives approximately 8.61 inches of rain during September. This month\u2019s total has already exceeded twice the historical average, with several days remaining for additional rainfall.<\/p>\n
Meteorologists attributed the record to multiple weather disturbances that repeatedly carried deep tropical moisture across the region. The pattern supported frequent thunderstorms and heavy downpours throughout Broward County and northern Miami-Dade County<\/p>\n
Some communities received more than 9 inches of rain over a period of several days. The storms flooded streets and created hazardous conditions for drivers in low-lying and poorly drained areas.<\/p>\n
The record rainfall followed an unusually hot and dry summer. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport recorded 11.52 inches of rain during summer 2026, approximately 11.33 inches below normal. That ranked as the eighth-driest summer at the location since records began in 1913.<\/p>\n
Fort Lauderdale also experienced its hottest summer on record, with an average temperature of 85.3 degrees.<\/p>\n
Forecasters expected drier air to arrive during the weekend, reducing rain chances.
