FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) – Officials are investigating after two cranes came down onto a home in Fort Lauderdale.<\/p>\n
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to the 800 block of Southeast 8th Street, just after 9:15 a.m. on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cCrews, when they got here, they were able to report that a crane had fallen into a house and caused a significant amount of damage to the roof of the structure,\u201d said FLFR Battalion Chief Ariel Alvarez.<\/p>\n
7Skyforce hovered above the overturned crane, its boom resting on the roof, capturing extensive damage to the parapet wall and building.<\/p>\n
The owners of the home said they\u2019ve been working on remodeling it for months.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a shame that I saw this happen. This is a new friend of mine; he just moved into the neighborhood, and he\u2019s been renovating the house,\u201d said Mike, a neighbor. \u201cHe\u2019s really done a great job with it.\u201d<\/p>\n
7Skyforce also showed the truck attached to the crane, belonging to Cooper Crane, and an extermination company that was going to use the crane to tent the building for fumigation.<\/p>\n
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, but Mike\u2019s theory involves the recent wet weather.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt diluted all the ground and all the structure that was underneath the bricks,\u201d Mike said. \u201cYou should never put something, especially, on historic homes\u2019 bricks. Keep everything on the road because that\u2019s where we know the sound structure is.\u201d<\/p>\n
Crews spent the rest of the morning trying to upright the crane and clean up the mess. At one point, during that process, a second crane gave way and toppled onto the ground.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have to deconstruct what has taken place here to get it back to a safe situation,\u201d said FLFR Chief Stephen Gollan. <\/p>\n
Among the pressing matters to address was a leaking diesel tank before any of the toppled machinery could be handled \u2014 a process Gollan said will be very intricate.<\/p>\n
\u201cMethodically remove the pieces that have happened. Part of that will require cutting the secondary crane because of the damage to that crane, we won\u2019t be able to retrack that. Once that has been removed, then they\u2019ll focus on the initial crane incident and up righting that crane,\u201d said Gollan.<\/p>\n
The homeowner\u2019s excitement to remodel the property to their liking has now been dashed by an unimaginable mistake.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy heart goes out to him right now, and his family, because they were just so excited to move into this house, and now they have to deal with this tragedy just because somebody wasn\u2019t really paying attention and doing what they needed to do,\u201d Mike said.<\/p>\n
Officials said no injuries were reported.<\/p>\n
By Thursday night, crews managed to extract the second crane that collapsed and continued disassembling sections of the first crane to be delicately removed.<\/p>\n
Curious neighbors from all over the area gathered around the perimeter of the property to take a look as crews continued the daunting work.<\/p>\n
The homeowner said they do not see themselves moving in any time soon because the home has suffered substantial roof and water damage as a result of the dual crane collapses.<\/p>\n
