The University of Tampa teamed up with Chase Bank to show students how to recognize and dodge scams. Young adults lost $490 million to fraud last year. Teachers at the school joined forces with the bank to prepare students for what’s coming.<\/p>\n

People between ages 20 and 29 lost about $490 million to scams and fraud in 2025, according to data from the Federal Trade Commission. That’s a staggering number. The partnership targets a growing threat to college students, who encounter tricks that differ from those aimed at older people.<\/p>\n

Scammers go after young adults through scholarships, rental applications, and job postings. Social media ads also create problems for this age group.<\/p>\n

“Things like social media ads,” said Leigh Weaver, the community manager at Chase, according to FOX 13 News<\/a>. “So, it could be a company that has a sale, something that really, when you think about it, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. They’re also telling people that they can help them erase their student loan debt, and they’re also asking for their personal information for job applications.”<\/p>\n

The training program teaches students to verify information through the company, agency, or bank involved before responding. Fraudsters use fake arrest threats. Some pretend to be family members. These tactics trick victims into giving up sensitive data.<\/p>\n

Students should contact the agency involved or a trusted family member instead of immediately responding to unexpected calls, texts, or social media offers. Taking this verification step can keep students from becoming a victim to schemes that promise deals or services that seem to be too good to be true.<\/p>\n

The Federal Trade Commission data shows that while seniors remain targets for scammers, young adults face equal vulnerability to evolving tactics. Student loan debt elimination promises have become a common hook used by fraudsters seeking personal information from college students.<\/p>\n

The program at the Tampa school represents an effort to educate students before they lose money to schemes that grow more sophisticated each day.
