Autumn Kelso (USA) may be small in size, but she certainly isn’t lacking spirit.

For the last five years, this determined firefighter has braved all kinds of house calls and calamities in the region around St. Pete Beach, Florida, USA – whether that entails driving around in the wailing red truck, spraying the high-powered water hose, or entering flaming buildings.

"Autumn

Yet despite the tough nature of her job, Autumn isn’t backing down – and this year, all her hard work paid off as she was awarded the Guinness World Records title as the shortest firefighter (female) on the globe.

Standing just 4 ft 10 in (147.32 cm) tall – that’s shorter than Napoleon – she officially nabbed the title on 18 January, to the delight of everyone in her firehouse.

"Autumn

“This has got to be the coolest experience ever,” said Autumn to GWR. “Obviously I didn’t become a firefighter thinking that this was going to unfold later down the road – I’ve been a firefighter for five years now, and this was just a joke in the firehouse.

“One of the guys decided to look it up one day, and realized that I could in fact actually go for this award,” she continued. “We followed the steps, there was a big measuring process, and here we are! It’s really just kind of a fun twist of fate, if you will.”

"Autumn

Autumn decided to become a firefighter after spending her 20s in the corporate world, eventually deciding that life behind a desk wasn’t for her. She never dreamed as a child that she would end up battling flames for a living, but she had some supportive friends working in the service who encouraged her to apply and guided her throughout the process.

The rest, they say, is history.

"The

“The best part of my job is being able to help make a difference to the community,” she said. “There’s no better feeling than being able to show up and see someone – who appears to be having the worst day of their life – and you’re there, and you’re able to make a little bit of a difference to them.

“And they’ll even be appreciative of it and say ‘thank you’ – and that’s just a really good feeling.”

"Autumn

Yet even though she loves being a firefighter, Autumn also doesn’t shy away from discussing how difficult the position is.

"Autumn

Those working in a firehouse must be able to withstand extreme conditions, high-pressure scenarios, and the mental strain of long, on-call shifts – not to mention the intense physical challenges such as dragging heavy materials. Autumn worked hard to be where she is today, and because of her efforts she is able to participate fully alongside these other trained professionals.

"Autumn

And similarly to the mentality of the shortest firefighter (male), 4 ft 2 in (127 cm)-tall Vince Brasco (USA), Autumn is adamant that her height doesn’t impact her ability to do her job.

She says that it’s actually provided her with the tenacity (and creativity) to work around troublesome problems.

"Autumn

“Well, of course, I can’t reach the top shelf!” she joked.

“But I get the job done. A lot of the guys around here will call me ‘spider monkey’ because I’ll climb on whatever I need to.”

"The

In fact, she says that her height can often be an advantage, explaining that: “anytime I’ve ever had to crawl through a window – or if there’s ever anything up in an attic – usually the guys are the first to send me up there, because those are really tight spaces.”

"Autumn

Her spirit has also gotten her out of some dangerous spots.

Three years ago, her crew was dispatched out to a trailer that was on fire, and when they arrived a group of neighbours and bystanders frantically informed them that there was a woman trapped inside the burning structure.

“My partner and I went inside to do our primary search, and upon doing so, the two of us actually fell through the trailer floor,” Autumn said. “I had to call a ‘MayDay.’”

Once the emergency radio dispatch was received, Autumn and her crew were able to fight through the flames and rescue everyone safely and without injuries.

“This was kind of a scary situation that had never happened before,” she said. “But we got through it, we followed protocol, and we did everything we were supposed to do… everyone came out alive and well – but it was pretty intense that day.”

"Autumn

This resilient attitude has truly allowed her to become a special part of the firehouse, no matter her size. Firefighters joke around – “obviously my big joke is my height,” she teased – but overall she said everyone is very respectful, especially because her stature is entirely out of her control.

"The

“There’s no medical or genetic reason why I’m tiny,” she explained. “I was just born petite, and I’ve always been that way.”

"Autumn

Moreover, she advises that other shorter-sized people use her story as a lesson: don’t let others decide what you can do, just because of your dimensions.

"Autumn

“Take the risk. Don’t let other people define your limits,” said Autumn. “Firefighting is hard for anybody – mentally and physically. Whether you’re 4 ft 10 in or 6 ft 3 in. This career is not easy.

“You’re going to be frustrated, probably discouraged some days, but you just have to show up and your willingness to never give up won’t go unnoticed.”

"Two

And even though firefighters may have big boots to fill, we think they fit this petite record holder perfectly.
