You would be hard-pressed to find anyone around the NBA saying anything bad about Sean Sweeney. Many players, frankly, thank Sweeney for helping them in their development, like San Antonio Spurs forward Carter Bryant did on The Road Trippin’ podcast.

An Orlando Magic team that viewed itself as a contender hiring a rookie head coach is certainly a sign of the faith they have in his vision. It was Sweeney’s intensity and focus that sold the Magic on going for it with this longtime assistant.

The Magic did not change their roster much. While this team is still young and likely to make some internal improvements, the real change for the Magic will come from what their coach provides.

And nobody knows what a Sean Sweeney team looks like.

But one thing should be clear: Sweeney will bring a very detailed and intentional approach. He has his designs, and they are very specific. It has everyone around the team excited.

As Sweeney begins his first camp, success is not necessarily going to be in the plan, but how it is implemented. Sweeney has been building for this moment.

“When we think about our team identity, we want to make sure that we’re an edges everyday team, that’s looking to compete at the highest level,” Sweeney told Dan Savage of OrlandoMagic.com. “We want to have great connectivity. We want to be connected.

“Lou Holtz always used to say, ‘Great chemistry is like adding an All-American.’ In [the NBA], we don’t have All-Americans, but we want to be playing with that six-on-five level of connectedness. And the last piece, from a team identity part, is we want to have a one-way-in, one-way-out mentality, where we’ve got a level of toughness both mentally and physically that we can be excited about. And at the end of the day, just in general, we want to have the attitude of we’re doing together what none of us can do alone.”

Expect big, block text in response to every question. During his introductory press conference, it often felt like he was reading from notes or a teleprompter. Every word was carefully chosen and said with purpose.

That seems to be the approach Sweeney is bringing to the job. Success comes from the details and the little things that separate winning from losing.

Orlando is rebuilding its identity after slipping on defense last year. It is trying to find a way to break through in the Playoffs.

It all starts with the little things.

Sean Sweeney has said and done the right things

At this point, it is all talk though.

Sean Sweeney is already developing the coach speak and terms that he will define the season, at least publicly.

Everyone knows what he says — talking about the team’s physicality, commitment to defense, togetherness and speed. He noted to Dan Savage of OrlandoMagic.com that the team’s defense will play with “a level of appropriate violence” to go with the team’s physicality.

They will not back down, similar to what Jamahl Mosley and his staff preached.

Orlando’s first focus is re-establishing its defensive identity. Nobody would blame them for focusing on that. Everyone acknowledges that is the key to their success.

Sweeney’s ideas for the offense have started from his philosophy that the goal is to get the best shot as quickly as possible. He specified the team wants to attack quickly, but play with discipline and togetherness.

But that still amounts to talking points and buzzwords. The outside world will not get a feel for what Sweeney wants to accomplish until the Magic take the floor for the first time in Memphis on Oct. 7.

That is not how things are behind the scenes.

Sweeney has made the rounds, visiting Magic players and getting to know them. Several players met in Southern California to play in the Rico Hines Run and work out together, with the Magic’s coaching staff in tow. Most of the roster was in Orlando before Labor Day to get group workouts in.

While nothing is fully implemented, Sweeney has likely outlined his plans in more specificity in those meetings. The Magic have an idea of who they will be before training camp begins and the team installs and works on who this team will be the rest of the season.

Coaching is still about relationships

The reason Jamahl Mosley was so successful in building the Orlando Magic from a rebuilding team to a playoff team was the relationships and trust he built with his team. He got everyone to believe in a bigger vision when the results were not apparent.

Success was built on trust and relationships.

One of the issues last year, at least according to some reports, was how that trust was frayed. Something was off.

And part of Sean Sweeney’s early work as the head coach has been building his relationships with the staff he has brought on to assist him, the remaining staffers with the Magic, and, most importantly, the team and players themselves.

That is why his trips around the country to visit and meet with players has been so important. He is building those relationships and that trust that will be vital in making those details work.

The players themselves have plenty to play for and plenty on the line this season. It feels like a pressure-packed season. They have plenty to make up for after last year’s injury-filled disappointment.

Sean Sweeney told Dan Savage of OrlandoMagic.com that Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner’s work habits have been “exemplary,” and the duo has been great to be around. There seems to be lots of motivation to make good on this team’s potential.

He praised Desmond Bane’s leadership among the group and Jalen Suggs’ commitment this offseason.

It is all a puzzle that Sweeney will be spending the next month putting together. And the next six months tinkering and trying to piece together into a playoff team — and much more.

As the Magic enter training camp, nobody is questioning that Sweeney will have the detail to get them where they want to go. It is just about starting to do the work to implement it.
