FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. (WINK) — Fort Myers Beach parking rates are going up starting Oct. 1.

The Fort Myers Beach Town Council decided to raise rates during a meeting on Wednesday. Street parking will go from $5 to $6, the first increase since 2022.

“Six is bad enough. I mean, five. I thought five was a lot. You know, I think it used to be like two or something,” John Jaensch said.

Jaensch has come to Fort Myers Beach every day for the past five years. He said he wishes the town wouldn’t raise the rates.

“I guess it’s important to the city, but it’s sort of hard for everybody, especially with the way groceries is and stuff like that. Now it’s rough for everyone to make it. So it’s sort of sort of a drag,” Jaensch said.

Annual resident parking passes that cost $50 will go up to $75. The town will also sell 500 non-resident parking passes for $300 each.

Town leaders said the parking increase is an effort to support the town’s over $13 million budget. The rate hike comes as parking options shrink.

Bowditch Point Parking and Lynn Hall Memorial Park are both closed for months, undergoing restoration and reconstruction years after Hurricane Ian. Toni Wood said she arrives in the morning before parking fees start because of the pricing.

“I mean it’s inconvenient. The parking’s inconvenient. It’s hard to find parking. I mean I get here in the morning before they charge, just because of the pricing,” Wood said.

Hannah Tummes said the situation creates a challenge for beachgoers.

“With less parking spaces being available and now parking being more expensive, it’s a bit well. It’s a dilemma, really,” Tummes said.

Beachgoers who want to avoid parking hassles can take ride share or public transportation.

Those who do park can scan a QR code to pay through an app or use the town’s website.

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.
