Instead of rushing to cut funding for programs that serve LGBTQ+ residents and other diverse communities, local leaders voted to maintain existing support before Florida’s new anti-DEI law takes effect.

And honestly? That distinction matters.

Florida’s Senate Bill 1134, formally titled the “Official Actions of Local Governments,” prohibits counties and municipalities from funding, promoting, or taking certain official actions related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. It also places restrictions on local DEI programs, offices, contracts, and grants. The law is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027.

So yes, January 1 is shaping up to be a particularly unpleasant way to kick off the new year for people who rely on these community programs.

But here’s the important part: January 1, 2027 is still January 1, 2027.

Miami Beach and Tallahassee Aren’t Pre-Defunding

According to the ACLU of Florida, commissioners in Miami Beach voted unanimously to preserve funding for Miami Beach Pride and other LGBTQ+ community initiatives. Tallahassee leaders also unanimously voted to maintain funding and staffing for the Tallahassee-Leon County Commission on the Status of Women & Girls, while keeping support for Tallahassee Pride, the Experience Asia Festival, and the Filipino Festival.

The ACLU of Florida, along with Equality Florida and the Community Justice Project, had previously urged 156 cities and counties across the state not to voluntarily surrender their local authority ahead of the law’s effective date.

And that is really the story here.

It is not simply about Pride funding. It is about what happens when governments start assuming the worst before a law actually requires them to change course.

The ACLU describes that concern as “pre-compliance,” arguing that local governments should not unnecessarily eliminate programs simply because a new restriction is coming.

Because Community Funding Is About Actual People

For anyone who has ever attended a Pride event, relied on an LGBTQ+ community organization, found a cultural space where they felt welcome, or simply needed to know that their city saw them as part of the community, “funding” can sound like an abstract government word.

It isn’t.

Funding can mean the Pride event happens. It can mean community workers remain employed. It can mean cultural festivals continue. It can mean organizations have the resources to provide services to people who might otherwise struggle to find them.

That is why these decisions carry cultural weight beyond a municipal budget meeting.

And this is happening against a much larger backdrop of governments and institutions reassessing or cutting DEI programs and funding in the United States and internationally. Florida’s law specifically targets certain local-government activities involving DEI, while also establishing restrictions around local government grants and contracts.

For now, Miami Beach and Tallahassee have chosen not to erase programs before the law requires them to do so.

A Little Courage Goes a Long Way

The ACLU of Florida characterized the decisions as examples of local leaders examining what the law actually requires instead of automatically doing more than the law demands.

And perhaps that is the part worth remembering.

Laws can change what governments are permitted to do. But communities still have voices, local leaders still have responsibilities, and there is a difference between complying with a law and voluntarily going further than it requires.

For LGBTQ+ people and other communities watching funding disappear in different places, seeing a city say, essentially, “Not yet, and not without looking carefully at what we’re actually required to do,” can be meaningful.

Because sometimes protecting a community does not require a dramatic speech, a rainbow flag flying in the wind, or a viral moment.

Sometimes it looks like showing up to a commission meeting, reading the law carefully, and deciding that the people who already have your support are worth continuing to fund.

And yes, everyone, that takes some balls.

When the leaders have morals and care for all of their community members, funding stays safe.
