MIAMI — Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Novell’s crew transferred 10 aliens to the Bahamas, Sunday, following an interdiction of a 30-foot vessel approximately forty miles east of Fort Lauderdale.

Coast Guard Cutter Robert Yered’s crew boarded a 30-foot sailing vessel, Friday, and discovered 10 people aboard. The aliens were transferred to the ship for processing. The aliens were further transferred to USCGC Margaret Norvell.

“In the face of daunting, 8-foot seas, the crew of the Robert Yered demonstrated extraordinary professionalism and dedication for hours on end,” said Lt. Richard Rodriguez, the cutter’s commanding officer. “It is precisely this level of steadfast commitment that allows us to succeed in our missions. Their performance was a testament to our readiness to save lives and protect our nation’s maritime borders, even under the most grueling conditions.”

Once aboard a Coast Guard cutter, aliens are processed to determine their identity and are provided food, water, shelter and basic medical attention before disposition.

The Coast Guard, along with its Operation Vigilant Sentry and Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos partners, maintains a continual presence with air, land and sea assets in the Florida Straits, Windward Passage, Mona Passage and Caribbean Sea in support of OVS. This multiagency and multilayered approach is designed to protect the safety of life at sea while preventing unlawful maritime entry to the United States and its territories.
