Body pulled from water at Wekiva Springs, officials say<\/p>\n

\"Madilyn\"Pattrik<\/a>SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. \u2014<\/p>\n

A swimmer died Monday evening after going underwater and failing to resurface near Wekiva Island in Seminole County, according to the Seminole County Fire Department.<\/p>\n

The incident happened just before 7:15 p.m. at the popular recreation area near Wekiva Springs Road. Divers later recovered the swimmer’s body from the water.<\/p>\n

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said the death appears to be an accidental drowning. Detectives also found no indication the incident involved an alligator.<\/p>\n

Two witnesses, Tara and Kira, told WESH 2 they noticed the swimmer was separated from everyone else and appeared to be struggling in the water. They said they alerted nearby staff and called 911 after realizing the swimmer had not resurfaced.<\/p>\n

The experience left a lasting impact on both women.<\/p>\n

“I definitely still feel like I didn’t do enough, even though the officers told us we did everything right and they were proud of us for doing something that wasn’t being done,” Tara said.<\/p>\n

She hopes the tragedy serves as a reminder for people to look out for one another when they’re around the water.<\/p>\n

“Be mindful of where you are, who you’re with,” she said. “Don’t take your eyes off the people you love or even your neighbors.”<\/p>\n

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the incident. No additional information about the victim has been released.<\/p>\n
