JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 The Jacksonville Transportation Authority has received a subpoena from the Florida Attorney General\u2019s Office, News4JAX confirmed Tuesday.<\/p>\n
JTA issued a statement, saying it is \u201cprepared to fully cooperate. The JTA remains committed to transparency and accountability and will provide information as requested throughout this process.\u201d<\/p>\n
News4JAX is working to obtain a copy of the subpoena. <\/p>\n
We\u2019ve also reached out the Attorney General\u2019s Office for a response. <\/p>\n
The subpoena comes as Jacksonville city leaders are stepping in to help determine the future of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority as JTA faces a nearly $40 million budget shortfall.<\/p>\n
City Councilman Ron Salem hosted a JTA Matters meeting at City Hall, following a difficult board meeting. More than 150 layoffs are expected as the authority works to stabilize its finances.<\/p>\n
JTA can now use $30 million in local gas-tax money it has already received to pay down a loan and cover severance packages. A spokesperson said the authority will have 10 years to repay the money.<\/p>\n
Salem said the city needs to help guide JTA through the financial crisis and make sure the authority moves toward a more stable future.<\/p>\n
\u201cI advised the leadership to be bold,\u201d Salem said. \u201cWe have got to get JTA on good financial grounds and this is painful. They\u2019re difficult cuts, but in my opinion, we need to be supportive and try to move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
The financial crisis could also affect transit service outside Duval County. The Clay County Board of Commissioners voted to end a funding agreement with JTA.<\/p>\n
