St. Petersburg, FL – St. Petersburg police are searching for a Mercedes driver who allegedly left the scene after a collision that killed a motorcyclist.

The crash happened Sept. 27 at Fourth Street North and Ninth Avenue North. Investigators said a 65-year-old Pinellas Park man was riding a motorcycle on Fourth Street North when the driver of a Mercedes SUV allegedly turned west onto Ninth Avenue North in front of him.

The vehicles collided after the Mercedes entered the motorcycle’s path, according to police. Authorities said the Mercedes driver allegedly continued away without remaining at the scene or providing information.

Emergency personnel transported the motorcyclist to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. Police did not immediately release his name or provide additional information about the motorcycle.

Investigators released slow-motion video Monday showing the Mercedes traveling near the crash scene. Police described it as a dark gray or black Mercedes SUV with significant damage to the front passenger side.

Authorities have not released a license plate number, model year or more specific description of the vehicle. Police also have not disclosed whether the video captured the collision or showed the Mercedes only near the area.

The driver had not been identified or arrested as of the department’s latest update. No arrest report was available. Investigators have not announced whether speed, impairment or another factor contributed to the crash.

Anyone with information about the Mercedes, its driver or the circumstances surrounding the collision is asked to contact the St. Petersburg Police Department at 727-893-9970.

The investigation remains active.
