Retirees love Florida, and it’s been that way for decades. Relaxed coastal living, sunny days, and senior-friendly communities have long made the state a popular choice. Even with recent trends showing some seniors looking elsewhere<\/a>, the Sunshine State still attracts thousands, especially to its quieter coastal towns. That’s true for Brevard County, a 70-mile-long stretch of historic waterfront communities along Florida’s East Coast, offering retirees plenty of outdoor recreation. For many residents, the ocean is minutes away, making it easy to switch from quiet beach mornings to an afternoon of shopping and dining.<\/p>\n Brevard County is known as Florida’s Space Coast, in part because it’s home to Kennedy Space Center. The county has an overall Niche<\/a> grade of A and ranks 10th among Florida’s best counties for retirees. Brevard is already home to a sizable retirement-age population, with adults 65 and older accounting for about 27% of residents<\/a>. Cities and communities in Brevard include\u00a0Melbourne, Palm Bay, Titusville, and Viera. Retirees looking for easy waterfront access can also consider\u00a0Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach, Merritt Island, and Cape Canaveral. The coastal towns appeal to Floridians leaving the busy South Florida scene, with one Niche<\/a> saying, “Compared to Miami, which is where I moved from … I love it!! Little to no traffic, no tolls, beautiful beaches, friendly and respectful people, very affordable homes for both first-time homebuyers and retired couples.”<\/p>\n Sandwiched roughly halfway between Jacksonville and West Palm Beach, Brevard County is also\u00a0within driving distance of Orlando.\u00a0For retirees or out-of-towners flying in, getting here is relatively easy. A\u00a0few international airports are within 60 miles of Brevard, with Orlando International Airport (MCO) serving as the main hub. Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB) is closer and can be a convenient option, too. Locals traveling to the region by car can easily access Brevard via\u00a0State Road 528, U.S. 192, and Interstate 95.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n Brevard County offers tons of outdoor fun for active seniors<\/p>\n Although retirees also consider states in the Mid-Atlantic region<\/a>,\u00a0AARP<\/a>\u00a0reported that Florida attracted more incoming adults 65 and older than any other state in 2025. After\u00a0all, the Sunshine State still offers active retirees lots of opportunities to play outdoors. With\u00a0over 200 sunny days<\/a>, older adults can build an outdoor routine pretty much year-round. A retired New Yorker commented on the City Data<\/a> forum, saying, “Overall, we are happier here. Warm weather just makes life less irritable from my experience […] We like the laid-back and casual nature of Brevard.” After morning coffee, seniors can head to the beach, paddle and spot wildlife on the scenic waterways, or hike a shaded trail. When afternoon showers roll in, retirees can kick back at home before a sunset walk along a local pier.<\/p>\n One perk of living in Brevard County is that most residents can reach the water in roughly 25 minutes or less.\u00a0Retirees with limited mobility will also find\u00a0beaches, parks, and trails with accessible features. Seniors can catch sunrises at Millennium Beach Park<\/a>, a small park in Indian Harbour Beach with a boardwalk and other facilities. “The regular morning beachgoers are friendly. Best beach spot to enjoy the sunrise, very peaceful,” remarked<\/a> a resident. You’ll find shaded picnic spots to sit and enjoy the views, too. Alternatively, drive to Manatee Cove Park<\/a> in Merritt Island and watch for manatees. If you’re on a fixed budget, this park is free and offers fishing, trails, and amenities including a natural canoe launch, a pavilion, and a playground.<\/p>\n Seniors can stay active at\u00a0Canaveral National Seashore<\/a>. This 58,000-acre park offers hiking, fishing, paddling, camping, and\u00a0accessible beaches along one of Florida’s longest stretches of coastline<\/a>. Volunteering<\/a> or joining\u00a0ranger-led activities<\/a> are great ways to stay connected to nature and form community. In a blog on the Friends of Canaveral<\/a> website, a retiree called the park “my sanctuary, my happy place, and a secret that I shared with family and friends. When I retired, I signed up to be a Volunteer-in-Park, to give back to the special place that is the national seashore.”<\/p>\n

Once outside of its walkable pockets, the reality is that Brevard is a car-dependent county. While Cocoa Beach is somewhat walkable with a Walk Score<\/a> of 60, the number is much lower for Palm Bay at 13 and Merritt Island at 24, meaning a car is needed for daily errands and doctor’s visits.<\/p>\n The Historic Cocoa Village<\/a> is pedestrian-friendly. Residents\u00a0can\u00a0walk a small distance to\u00a0local cafes, bakeries, antique stores, and riverfront parks. For a closer look at the town’s 160-year history, retirees can take the self-guided historic walking tour<\/a>, which is great for an easy stroll past historical landmarks, century-old homes, and museums. Events like the Sip and Shops<\/a> and the Cocoa Village Art and Craft Fairs<\/a> are a way to get out, meet new people, and shop for local goods.<\/p>\n Even though Melbourne is one of the largest cities in Brevard, its downtown surprisingly has walkable areas with a small-town vibe. Local shops line East New Haven Avenue with sidewalks for easy strolling. You can spend a quiet afternoon at an art gallery, then meet up with friends at a coffee shop, and catch a show at the Henegar Center<\/a>, all within a few blocks of each other. Afterward, head to the waterfront and stroll along Crane Creek or watch\u00a0dolphins swim in the Indian River Lagoon.
