It represents an investment not only in a world-class institution, but in Miami’s continued rise as a global center for innovation, research and talent. It is also an invitation to all of us to think bigger about what our city can become.

It is inspiring to witness Griffin’s continued belief in Miami and to reflect on the civic and philanthropic leaders whose vision and commitment have helped position our community for this moment.

Transformational investments are ultimately measured by more than their size. Their true value is revealed over time, in the people whose lives they change, the opportunities they create and what they make possible for generations to come.

Miami knows something about that.

In 1960, a consequential gift of land helped establish what would become Miami Dade College, a place where generations of Miamians would get their start.

No one could have fully anticipated what would grow from that investment. More than 2.5 million students later, MDC graduates have helped build Miami and made lasting contributions across our nation and around the world — as nurses and teachers, entrepreneurs and innovators, artists and public servants, and business and civic leaders.

That same belief in collective investment runs throughout Miami’s civic history.

In the 1990s, community leaders asked residents to contribute one extra penny on restaurant and bar tabs, creating the nation’s first dedicated funding source to address homelessness. Miami-Dade voters later chose to invest in children by creating The Children’s Trust and have continued to reaffirm that commitment at the ballot box.

And every November, Miami shows up for Give Miami Day, now the largest single-city giving day in the country. Last year, our neighbors made more than 120,000 donations to local nonprofits, most of them modest gifts of $25 or $50.

These investments are vastly different in size and purpose, but they share something fundamental: a belief that Miami is worth investing in and that we can stand together to prioritize opportunity for all who call this place home, in ways that endure and sustain over time.

That is what makes the arrival of Carnegie Mellon so consequential.

Its global leadership in engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence and research will add an extraordinary new dimension to Miami’s educational landscape. The possibilities for collaboration, discovery and talent development will strengthen our entire region.

The opportunity before us is to ensure that this investment becomes part of an even more connected ecosystem, one in which our schools, colleges and universities, employers, philanthropists and community organizations work together to create pathways for Miamians at every stage.

Imagine a young person discovering a passion for technology in a Miami classroom, earning a credential or degree at Miami Dade College, continuing into advanced study or research at Carnegie Mellon and ultimately building a company or career here at home.

That is the promise of this moment.

Miami’s greatest strength has always been its people. Families have come here from around the world seeking opportunity. Entrepreneurs have built businesses from the ground up. Artists have created a culture unlike anywhere else. And generations of Miamians have invested in institutions that opened doors for those who came next.

Our city is still being built. Our skyline continues to change, new industries are taking root and our educational landscape is expanding in ways that would have been difficult to imagine even a generation ago.

The question now is what we will make possible with it.

Decades from now, the greatest measure of this catalytic investment will not simply be the campus that was built nor the research that was conducted. It will be the people whose lives were changed, the ideas that were born here and the opportunities created for generations we have yet to meet.

Miami has an extraordinary opportunity before us. What comes next is ours to build together.

Rebecca Fishman Lipsey is president and CEO of The Miami Foundation.
