The Orlando Magic spent the first day of their training camp drilling defensive principles<\/a> and foundations. They spent the afternoon sessions installing some of their offensive principles.<\/p>\n

Their second day was spent working on that offensive execution and spacing. They took what they learned on tape and in walkthroughs and applied it to the court.<\/p>\n

There is a lot to absorb and a lot to learn as they figure out what Sean Sweeney wants from his team<\/a>. They are getting accustomed to the way he wants to run things.<\/p>\n

Simplicity is the task early on in camp. This is about getting the basics down and layering things on top of it. Sweeney knows he is working off a good foundation with a team that has experienced some success already.<\/p>\n

One thing is different and a bit challenging for the team. A new coach brings new verbiage and terminology. The way one coach describes something could be completely different.<\/p>\n

Everyone is learning a new language. it has become the biggest challenge early in camp.<\/p>\n

“We always want to speak the same language,” Sweeney said after practice Wednesday. “Everything we are doing, we want to drill it down. Sometimes they may not say the right words, but they have got to understand what we want to do, and then we have to get them to say it correctly. No hablo, pero tiendo. You have to make sure you understand if you can’t speak, and then we would like you to speak at some point.”<\/p>\n

Communication is always an early emphasis in every training camp. <\/p>\n

Coaches often make sure teams are over-talking early in camp. A loud gym is a good gym for keeping up energy and reinforcing principles. It also means the players are engaged and trying to get on the same page or communicate seamlessly.<\/p>\n

Bridging that gap is one of the vital pieces for the team.<\/p>\n

Orlando has been seemingly cautious with some early injuries. Jonathan Isaac is limited by his still-bothersome knee sprain<\/a> from last year, but is participating in some drills. Anthony Black was held out of practice with a minor ankle sprain, and Noah Penda tweaked a hamstring.<\/p>\n

But they all can still be involved as the team lays down its foundations. The learning seems more important than the application in live action early on.<\/p>\n

The Magic know there is a long journey ahead of them. And a lot to learn.<\/p>\n

Focus on coming together<\/p>\n

It seems early in camp, communication has been a greater focus for the Orlando Magic as they learn how Sean Sweeney wants to operate this team. Learning how to communicate with each other and with the coaches is vital to the team’s success.<\/p>\n

Wednesday’s practice was spent on spacing, running habits in transition and the actions the team wants to use to create advantages. Jalen Suggs said Sean Sweeney would stop the drill if a player was even a half step off his mark. The team is very into those fine details.<\/p>\n

But a lot of the process is also about keeping things simple. It is about understanding how to give the players the space they need to operate and working off that.<\/p>\n

There will be mistakes at this stage of camp, but the most important thing is the intention with which players play. They need to understand why they are doing the things they are trying to do as they learn to execute them.<\/p>\n

“I think coach hit it on the head in the film room this morning. Everybody wants everything to be perfect right now,” Desmond Bane said after practice Wednesday. “In reality, it’s not going to be that way. As long as we have the right intent and hold ourselves to the standard we are holding ourselves to, we’ll get better and get better quickly.”<\/p>\n

That is part of the much more purposeful and fine-detail approach<\/a> that Sweeney seems to be bringing to this team. The Magic are working on those particulars, even at a basic level right now.<\/p>\n

To get there, they have to be on the same page. And learning what the coaches want and how they want it is the big challenge early in camp.<\/p>\n

The learning process<\/p>\n

The Orladno Magic got a headstart on coming together, of course. That has helped lower the learning curve.<\/p>\n

Most of the team arrived in Orlando for voluntary workouts earlier than usual to try to get started on this work early. The coaches began teaching what they planned to implement and the language they would try to use.<\/p>\n

The team is still getting it all down. But things seem to be moving in the right direction.<\/p>\n

“I think early on, the communication has to be extremely high,” Desmond Bane said after practice Wednesday. “It will help bridge that gap, and the learning curve will speed up. Once we get into the game, we want it to be second nature because we’ve been intentional throughout this time.”<\/p>\n

There is still time. And how far developed the Magic are and can get will be judged by where the team is at after the first preseason game in one week in Memphis. But getting all on the same page is still the task ahead.<\/p>\n

This is where Sean Sweeney’s intentional approach will benefit.<\/p>\n

The Orlando Magic are focused on making every rep count. Sweeney said he is encouraged by how active the team has participated in all of this. Players are often talking to each other between reps and trying to make sure they are all held accountable and caught up to speed. The coaches step in when they need to so they can reinforce instruction.<\/p>\n

It has only been three practices with an afternoon session scheduled Wednesday (and at least another day of two-a-days ahead). Ther eis still a long way to go and a lot to learn.<\/p>\n

“We just listen and try to apply what we are being taught,” Jalen Suggs said after practice Wednesday. “It’s pretty simple. I think the hardest part is the verbiage and making sure you are communicating with what they want to hear and the terms they want to use. Speaking loud often and early. I think it has been going pretty well.”<\/p>\n

Sweeney said the energy has been good so far. Execution improved in the second practice. The team understands what he wants to run and what they are trying to accomplish. It is just about cleaning things up.<\/p>\n

There is still a lot to learn to bring this team together. They will just have to talk it out to get on the same page.<\/p>\n
