TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Plans are now on pause for a major development in northeast Tallahassee.<\/p>\n
If approved, the Welaunee Arch project would turn more than 1,200 acres of land into residential and commercial space. <\/p>\n
Phase one of the project was just given conditional approval just over two weeks ago.<\/p>\n
However, attorneys have requested a continuance to 2027 in order to bring the public up to speed on what could be happening. <\/p>\n
The project was set <\/a>to go before the Planning Commission on Oct. 6, followed by the City Commission on Nov. 4. <\/p>\n Attorney Gary Hunter represents Powerhouse, Inc., the family-owned company behind the project. <\/p>\n He said the request for a continuance was submitted Friday after multiple residents reached out with their concerns. <\/p>\n \u201cThe family said, \u2018If people are asking questions, let\u2019s sit down and answer them,\u2019\u201d Hunter said. \u201cSo, that\u2019s the reason for the continuance. I asked for it so that we could have a neighborhood\/community meeting.\u201d <\/p>\n If approved, phase one of the project would allow for up to 6,591 homes in addition to more than 425,000 square-feet of commercial and non-residential space. <\/p>\n Hunter said many of the people who contacted him don\u2019t want to see the land touched at all. <\/p>\n More Tallahassee news: <\/p>\n However, he said the land\u2019s development was already planned in the 90s, including a future I-10 interchange. <\/p>\n \u201cThe city and the landowner was involved in an extensive process to plan entitlements for all of that property for now, over 36 years.\u201d<\/p>\n Tallahassee resident Lynne Takacs has been vocal online with her questions and concerns regarding the project. <\/p>\n Takacs said she believes the continuance will give the community more opportunities to learn about the project and the impact it could have. <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m hopeful that they\u2019ll hold several where people can come and learn more about what\u2019s planned and ask questions, get answers and hopefully get to collaborate with the owners on what they see for the future,\u201d Takacs said. <\/p>\n The next hearing is expected in the spring of 2027. Hunter said Powerhouse would like to hold several community meetings before then, hopefully around November.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ll do a presentation with the consultant working on the project, with the engineer, and we\u2019ll answer any questions anyone wants to ask,\u201d Hunter said. <\/p>\n He said around 40% of the land would be designated for conservation.
