ORLANDO, Fla. \u2014 Orlando residents have a chance to speak up about street safety in their neighborhoods. The city is using $3.9 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to test new safety improvements.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need street safety,\u201d Ashley Germaine, a Parramore resident, said. \u201cThey are always hitting me, I\u2019m running into them. Sidewalks need to be better, we need things for our neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n
She is one of many Parramore residents who use an e-bike as their daily mode of transportation. She is pushing for change as Orlando plans its next meeting for street safety improvements.<\/p>\n
\u201cMore yielding signs, more bike lanes for us,\u201d Germaine said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of streets that don\u2019t have it. Brighter lights at night, we\u2019re always getting flats because there\u2019s things on the roads.\u201d<\/p>\n
Orlando District Five Commissioner Shan Rose said a new grant from the U.S. DOT\u2019s Safe Streets and Roads for All program will fund 28 quick-build projects in areas identified as needing safety improvements.<\/p>\n
This includes curb extensions, new striping, updated medians, and lane delineators.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a walkable community, specifically Parramore, but throughout,\u201d Rose said. \u201cMaking sure our students and families all feel safe.\u201d<\/p>\n
The idea is to test changes first then use what the city learns to help guide permanent projects.<\/p>\n
In District Five, the focus includes Springdale Rd. and Gibbens St., Concord St. and Springdale Rd., Rrio Grande Ave. and Lex Hester Ln., as well as Westmoreland Dr. between Carter St. and Gore St., Parramore Ave. and Jefferson St., and Concord St. between Parramore Ave. and Hughey Ave.<\/p>\n
