Following unanimous city council approval, Museum Circle will soon be known as Haskell Way, honoring longtime Jacksonville businessman and philanthropist Preston Haskell III.<\/p>\n
The Jacksonville City Council voted 17-0 to approve the honorary designation at its Sept. 8 meeting, with Council Members Randy White excused and Raul Arias non-voting. City Council Vice President Joe Carlucci and At Large Group 4 Council Member Matt Carlucci introduced the bill in August, after which it advanced through three committees \u2013Neighborhoods, Community Services, Public Health and Safety, Rules and Transportation, Energy and Utilities \u2013 each time with unanimous approval. The remaining 17 council members requested to be added to the legislation as co-sponsors.<\/p>\n
The ordinance also waives the two provisions requiring the honoree to be deceased for at least five years and to have lived within five miles of the street for at least 10 years.<\/p>\n
At the Sept. 1 TEU Committee meeting, Council Member Ken Amaro addressed questions regarding the waiver of the five-year moratorium and asked the Office of General Counsel if it was \u201csatisfied\u201d with the waiver moving forward, to which OGC responded that there is precedent for such a waiver and honorary designations have been made for honorees while they were still alive.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve known Mr. Haskell through my professional career,\u201d Amaro said. \u201cI can tell you what he\u2019s done for this community is immeasurable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Following the Sept. 8 city council meeting, Haskell Chief Marketing Officer Dave Auchter shared the following statement with Resident News:<\/p>\n
\u201cFollowing a months-long process sponsored by Jacksonville City Council Member Matt Carlucci, the City Council unanimously approved \u2013 and the Mayor signed \u2013 legislation renaming Museum Circle as Haskell Way. The designation improves wayfinding to Haskell\u2019s new global headquarters while creating a lasting tribute to our founder, philanthropist, and friend, Preston Haskell. We hope generations of Haskell family members and employees will take pride in this meaningful recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n
