{"id":416984,"date":"2026-10-02T18:08:12","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T18:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/416984\/"},"modified":"2026-10-02T18:08:12","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T18:08:12","slug":"city-county-consolidation-resident-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/416984\/","title":{"rendered":"City-County Consolidation \u2013 Resident News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018The urge to merge\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fifty-eight years ago, on October 1, 1968, the enactment of the roughly 2-to-1 approval of the city-county consolidation referendum was celebrated with a grand parade watched by more than 200,000 spectators.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/City-County-Consolidation-Seaboard-Coastline-Railroad-float-1800w.jpg\" alt=\"The Seaboard Coastline Railroad float.\" class=\"wp-image-62334\"  \/>The Seaboard Coastline Railroad float.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a 2018 \u201cFlorida Times-Union\u201d article by reporter Charlie Patton, city-county consolidation\u2019s supporters (the \u201cwhite hats\u201d) were opposed by \u201cso-called black hats.\u201d The \u201curge to merge,\u201d according to Patton\u2019s article, had been bandied about in the century since the Civil War ended in 1865. Sporadic efforts resulted in unincorporated neighborhoods \u2013 such as LaVilla, Fairfield, Springfield, Brooklyn, Riverside and East Jacksonville \u2013 becoming part of Jacksonville, but the greater goal was to eliminate duplication and save money by merging city and county offices and agencies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/City-County-Consolidation-Times-Union-front-page-1800w.jpg\" alt=\"Front page of the Florida Times-Union newspaper on October 1, 1968.\" class=\"wp-image-62339\"  \/>Front page of the Florida Times-Union newspaper on October 1, 1968.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his book \u201cJacksonville: The Consolidation Story, From Civil Rights to the Jaguars,\u201d the late UNF history professor James B. Crooks noted that \u201cJacksonville probably had the most unwieldy structural form of government of any city in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight years ago, citizens of Jacksonville celebrated the 50th anniversary of the city-county consolidation of government on a much smaller scale with an exhibit in the City Hall rotunda.
