STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — A woman is in custody after deputies say an altercation at a Martin County towing facility escalated into gunfire, triggering a law enforcement response, a school lockout and a pursuit Friday afternoon.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened shortly after 1 p.m. at a towing facility on Southeast Cove Road.

Investigators said a woman from Miami arrived at the tow yard to retrieve a vehicle that had been towed there earlier in the day.

Shortly afterward, people in another vehicle arrived at the facility and became involved in an altercation with the woman, according to MCSO.

The sheriff’s office said the woman retrieved a firearm and fired multiple shots at the other individuals before getting into a vehicle and fleeing the area.

Because the tow yard is about a half-mile from Murray Middle School, the sheriff’s office activated an active-shooter response and placed the school on lockout while deputies responded.

Road patrol deputies, aviation units, detectives and other available units began searching for the suspect vehicle.

Deputies located the vehicle traveling on Cove Road near U.S. 1 and attempted a traffic stop, according to MCSO. The sheriff’s office said the driver fled, prompting deputies to perform a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle.

Additional units moved in and immobilized the vehicle before the driver could flee again, according to MCSO.

The woman was taken into custody and transported to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, where detectives were questioning her.

The people who were allegedly targeted by the gunfire left the towing facility before deputies arrived. As of the sheriff’s office’s latest update, investigators did not know whether anyone had been struck by gunfire.

Murray Middle School sent out the following message to families:

“Good afternoon, Lions! Please note that we have heavy police presence in the area for an incident unrelated to Murray. We are following Martin County Sheriffs Office guidance and are on a lock out. We will remain in close contact with them and provide additional information as it becomes available. Thank you, Principal Roth”

The sheriff’s office has not released the woman’s identity or announced any charges.

The investigation remains active.

STUART, Fla.
