In an island chain known as a world-renowned sportfishing destination, it takes a supreme level of talent and influence to make a mark. But when you’ve earned the status as a household name in the angling community, it’s only right that your name should be up there with the greats.

Earlier this month, the International Game Fish Association inducted legendary angler Jose Wejebe into the organization’s 27th annual Hall of Fame class, adding the “Spanish Fly” host’s name to a list of 157 renowned anglers, scientists, conservationists and industry leaders.

Widely recognized as one of sportfishing’s headlining ambassadors, Jose’s story began long before he gained national recognition as the always-smiling host of ESPN2’s “Spanish Fly” TV show. Fleeing Cuba with his family in 1960, he took a full-fledged dive into the fishing world after being introduced to the water by his mother, a master.

He would go on to test the waters of Biscayne Bay with his father, earning his captain’s license at 18 and purchasing his first boat as a teen with money he earned working at a gas station.

His career path took a somewhat-related detour as he began diving and training marine mammals for the Miami Seaquarium. But a passion for fishing could not be contained to weekend trips as a fishing guide, and his reputation as a guide grew quickly after abandoning frozen fish in pursuit of tight lines full-time.

""The IGFA officially adds Jose Wejebe to its ranks as a Hall of Famer. Accepting the award for her father on Aug. 29 is Jose’s daughter Krissy, second from right, along with IGFA board chair Roy Cronacher, left, president Jason Schratwieser and board member Andy Mill. CONTRIBUTED

A true “student of the sport,” Wejebe would model the techniques of other fishing legends, traveling the globe to learn new methodologies and apply them to the waters of South Florida and the Keys. His legend grew as a tournament guide, and in 1987 he guided Bill Riesenfeld to an IGFA-record 44-pound, 12-ounce permit.

But as his daughter Krissy told the crowd gathered in Springfield, Missouri on Aug. 29 for the induction ceremony, the numbers didn’t matter to Jose.

“He used to say his ego was not his amigo, and he didn’t like the person he became when fishing got too competitive,” she said. “I remember when they finally caught that permit, he came home and told my mom, ‘Never again.’

“Jose’s greatest contribution wasn’t something you could weigh, win or hang on a wall,” she added. “It was the way he changed how people experienced fishing.”

Wejebe’s way of thinking would soon reach millions when he debuted as the host of the ESPN2 show “Spanish Fly” – named after his boat – in 1995. The program ran for 17 seasons, until he passed away in an airplane crash in Everglades City in 2012.

“He made you feel like you weren’t just watching a fishing show – you were invited along for the adventure,” Krissy said. “Sometimes that meant chasing a fish farther than any reasonable person probably should. Sometimes it meant stripping down to his underwear on national television because apparently that was the next logical step.”

For Jose, the point of the program wasn’t the “how”; it was the “why.”

"" "" ""

“Why the tide mattered, the wind mattered, why fish behaved differently from one day to the next, why one tiny change could mean an epic day or getting completely skunked,” Krissy said. “He didn’t just teach a generation how to catch fish. He taught them to be fishermen.”

During his life, the elder Wejebe spent his time supporting organizations like Make-A-Wish, RedBone, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and “people who simply needed help.”

Today, that legacy lives on in his daughter as she spearheads the Jose Wejebe Memorial Foundation, making fishing dreams come true for veterans, families, and especially children facing challenging life circumstances. And later this month, she’ll help revitalize Jose’s memory with the premiere of “Spanish Fly: The Next Generation,” a 2026 revival of the classic show on Outdoor America.

“As his daughter, I wish more than anything that he were standing here himself. I know this would have meant something to him,” Krissy told guests. “Not simply because his name is going into a Hall of Fame, but because the sport he loved gave him an extraordinary life – and he spent that life opening the door for other people to love it too.”
