Instead, the showdown with the No. 25 Missouri Tigers on Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium was objective proof that Florida was overrated and far too soft despite a strong 4-0 start in Year 1 under head coach Jon Sumrall.

The Gators fell 45-17 on homecoming in Columbia, Missouri, getting thoroughly outplayed on both sides of the ball, starting from the line of scrimmage outward. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz outcoached and outschemed Sumrall, offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner and especially defensive coordinator Brad White with Florida’s defense completely collapsing as its lines struggled to contain Mizzou on either end of the field.

Mizzou won for the first time in its last 10 games against ranked opponents and the first time against a top 10 team in the regular season since 2013. It was the program’s most dominant victory of its kind ever. Florida once again failed to beat a ranked team on the road, extending a 14-game drought since 2018, and was unable to defeat a second straight top 25 team while ranked itself, which has not happened since 2008. UF is now 1-7 in its last eight SEC road games.

With the game tied 10-10 late in the second half, the Tigers scored 10 points before the break and another touchdown on the other side of halftime, winning the “middle eight” with a +17 margin. It was effectively over for the Gators once the hosts added a field goal late in the third quarter, but it only got worse from there.

Florida ultimately allowed 35 consecutive points — from the second quarter until the final 47 seconds of the game — while giving up 560 total yards and being outgained by 235 yards.

It was one of the most pitiful performances in program history given the circumstances — despite a recent string of high-level failures in the prior regime — and a potential harbinger of what’s to come over the remainder of the season considering the top-tier challengers ahead on the Gators’ schedule.

“That was an earned loss by us. They’re a good football team; they didn’t need our help. They played really good, and hats off to them, but we did not play up to our standard,” Sumrall said.

“Embarrassing performance in every phase. Starts with the coaching. Starts with me. Told the guys in the locker room that I expect everybody to be a man, which means accept your actions and own it. … We have to play a lot better.

“I’m sick to my freakin’ stomach with what we just did. Livid.”

Let’s take a look at what went down — and why it went down — in Sumrall’s first loss and a defeat from which Florida must rebound immediately.

As bad as it gets

It’s somewhat surprising that it took so long for Florida’s defense to get exposed, and it was clear Saturday that the front seven gave up once it realized the secondary was not going to play winning football. The Gators got burned at the boundaries and down the middle of the field with regularity as one-time UF commit Austin Simmons carved up the defensive backs early and often, finishing with 340 yards passing and two touchdowns.

The secondary has been problematic all season, but a pass rush that looked to have improved masked some of those issues. On Saturday, the DBs did not get any help as Florida’s front was unable to contend against the strongest offensive line it has faced this season, and White appeared to have no answers for getting pressure, essentially refusing to blitz for most of the game. (White was the lowest graded by Only Gators out of Sumrall’s assistant hires.)

With the game clearly careening off a cliff, the Gators suddenly became uninterested in bottling up rushers, allowing a 77-yard scamper that was punched into the end zone a couple of plays later and an 80-yard rushing touchdown shortly after.

Mizzou receivers had individual high marks of 47, 36 and 29 yards — all longer than any reception hauled in by a Florida pass catcher until UF’s final drive, when sophomore quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. found junior wide receiver TJ Abrams for a 41-yard score in its final possession of the game.

The Gators played soft, got burned by receivers, straight up blew coverages and broke with regularity despite seemingly, at times, playing to bend but not break. This was best exemplified at the end of the first half when Mizzou seemed content to run out the clock, yet UF allowed enough space for a walk-off field goal.

“We haven’t played at the standard we need to play at a lot this year [in the secondary],” Sumrall said. “It’s not just one guy. … It would be a really easy fix if it was just one guy. It would be a really easy fix if it was just one thing. … Coach White can’t protect everybody; somebody’s gotta win a one-on-one down.”

Not helping matters on Saturday: Senior safety Bryce Thornton suffered an injury during pregame warmups and did not play. It is believed to be a soft-tissue injury.

Florida lost by 28+ points following a game it won by 20+ points for the first time in 15 years, an astounding statistic considering the horrendous defenses and frustrating coordinators the team has put on the field, especially over the prior two regimes.

MIA: Offense

Mizzou committed to stopping junior running back Jadan Baugh. That’s essentially all it needed to stop Florida. A stellar effort from a defensive front seven missing two starting pass rushers aided in capsizing UF’s offense. The Gators allowed the Tigers to score 35 straight points and went from 8:26 of the second quarter to the final 47 seconds of the game without changing its score.

Baugh carried 12 times for 13 yards — six of those touches came on the first drive of the game — as the Gators essentially gave up on trying to run the football after the first quarter. Sophomore Duke Clark, who exploded against Ole Miss, only got one carry, as UF rushers touched the ball just nine times after the opening drive.

Saturday marked Baugh’s fewest touches since Sept. 20, 2025, and his fewest yards since his third game in orange & blue as a true freshman back on Sept. 14, 2024.

“They did a really good job of playing with physicality. We missed some things, but they swarmed well to the football,” Sumrall said. … We still tried to commit to the run coming out of the half … now, in the fourth quarter, we got to a spot where you don’t have no choice. … We did not execute well in the run game in a lot of different areas.”

The Tigers did their best to force Faulkner’s hand by registering five tackles for loss on that first drive, which saw Sumrall give up and settle for a field goal on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line, a lack of aggression heretofore not seen from the coach. On the prior play, junior quarterback Aaron Philo missed a wide-open Clark in the flat for a touchdown, which would have started Florida’s day on a much better foot.

(The next quarter, after Philo received a poor spot on a third-down run, Sumrall decided to go on fourth-and-1 from UF’s 34-yard line with Philo immediately bottled up. Why he chose to go in that situation, but not with a touchdown 2 yards away on the opening drive, is tough to understand.)

Philo was essentially in a no-win situation the rest of the game. He made some quality throws, but protection was inconsistent (at best), and the absence of sophomore wide receiver Vernell Brown III seriously impacted the offense’s electricity.

Sophomore WR Dallas Wilson flashed with 66 yards and the Gators’ lone touchdown until their last drive. Philo finished 21 of 34 for 197 yards, while Jones completed all five of his passes for 86 yards.

It will be incumbent upon Faulkner and Sumrall to figure out how Florida can move the football if Baugh does not find early success. Abandoning the run as early as they did Saturday is simply not a strategy that will lead to any success for the Gators, and the fact that an experienced coordinator like Faulkner went so strongly away from running the ball is rather flummoxing in the first place.

What discipline?

It sure looked like Sumrall had Florida moving in the right direction after Week 1. Ever since, the Gators have been one of the least disciplined teams in the nation. They have committed 8+ penalties in four straight games (16 against Auburn) and indeed committed eight miscues, giving up 80 yards to the yellow-and-black Tigers on Saturday.

Nearly all of the penalties severely impacted the team. Senior offensive lineman Bryce Lovett was called for a blindside block (questionable, sure) that wiped out a massive first-down gain. Junior linebacker Aaron Chiles aided a touchdown drive with an untimely personal foul. An illegal formation by Florida wiped out a huge gain. Sophomore defensive lineman Jeremiah McCloud was tagged with a clapping penalty. Fifth-year DL Jamari Lyons committed unsportsmanlike conduct during a key third-quarter drive. Senior running back London Montgomery had a 94-yard kickoff return touchdown wiped out with not one but two penalties — personal foul and holding — on the same play.

Procedural issues like false starts or effort penalties like pass interference and holding can be acceptable in small bunches. Recurring 15-yard miscues that prevent progress on both sides of the ball are pure discipline issues that directly contribute to losing football games.

“What bothered me was our lack of execution, our lack of discipline, our lack of detail. I did not feel this [during the] week,” said Sumrall, noting that players only get 12 regular-season opportunities and must play their best each time out.

“… The fact that we put less than our best out there absolutely makes me freakin’ sick. I’m freakin’ livid over the fact that we just did that. Anybody that’s comfortable with that, come see me tonight, we ain’t moving forward like this. The score is the score, but it’s not just what we do but how we do it. How we just did what we did is not acceptable and will not be acceptable. I’m livid. I’m frustrated about so many things that I can’t pin it down to one thing.”

Odds & ends

Florida now trails 6-8 in the all-time series against Missouri, 6-7 since the Tigers joined the SEC and 2-4 in Columbia with losses in three straight meetings … the Gators have scored more touchdowns in five games (30) than they did in the entire 2025 season (29) … Florida’s defense did not force a turnover for just the third time in 29 games … UF has allowed opponents to score 21+ points in 13 of the last 14 games … the Gators are now 1-1 on the road and 1-1 against ranked opponents under Sumrall … Florida has scored in 478 consecutive games, an NCAA record

What it means

The Gators looked as pathetic as they did in any game under the prior regime on Saturday. In some ways, more so. Florida was outclassed in every conceivable way from the field to the booth, but most notable were its struggles at the line of scrimmage. The Gators could neither protect Philo nor find any momentum getting to Simmons in the backfield. They could neither create holes for Baugh nor stop the Tigers from gaining chunk yardage. As poorly as the secondary performed, if UF cannot find answers up front, the season will get extremely ugly with the likes of Texas and Georgia ahead on the schedule.

This creates a massive prove-it moment for Sumrall with a clear rebound opportunity ahead next week. Will he be able to turn the players’ emotional tide and find answers to the program’s massive flaws in practice this week? Will he be able to instill added discipline in a Florida team that again committed multiple costly penalties in key situations across all three phases?

“We have to grow up. We’ve got to be a more mature outfit. You cannot play that way against anybody in this league and expect an outcome that’s going to be favorable because it ain’t getting any easier,” he said. “Every team you play in this league is going to be talented. Missouri won. We earned the loss. They don’t need our help, but we beat ourselves at times tonight, too.”

Ultimately, no matter how poor the performance (disgusting) or how lopsided the score (nauseating), this only counts as one loss in the record book. The Gators still have more than half of a season remaining to bounce back from this loss, and all of their goals remain intact, even if this will be a sore spot should any eye test be required for evaluation before the year is out.

UF will almost certainly tumble in the college football rankings, perhaps all the way out of the top 25, despite its impressive win over Ole Miss.

“We haven’t looked like a complete football team at any moment yet. Sometimes, the record, having not lost, or beating a team that was ranked at a certain spot, can make you feel like you’ve arrived or you’ve done something. The standard of how you play this game, yeah, I want to be 1-0 every week, but that’s not enough. We have to be so much more detailed and disciplined in how we do things,” Sumrall explained.

“… You don’t have that performance today and not have some kind of sickness in your stomach about what we just did. If there’s guys on our football team that don’t own that, they won’t be on this football team very long. I don’t really care. We’re going to play with guys that are tough and love football and are committed to their development and improving as a team. … We’ve had a lot of improvement to do; it’s just been masked by winning some games.”

What’s next?

Florida returns home where it will host South Carolina with an early kickoff scheduled for ABC at noon ET or SEC Network at 12:45 p.m. next Saturday. The Gators are scheduled to face four straight ranked opponents after that game based on current top 25 standings.

“I’m going to do everything in my power — everything – to help them respond. That’s my job,” Sumrall concluded. “We’re not going to be OK with this. This is not our standard here. Disgusted by it. We have to help this team grow; that’s what our job is, and we need player leadership to help it grow.”

Image Credit: UAA What was billed as a “trap game” for the No. 8 Florida Gators was anything…

[6
54304,51538,54305,20207,12312,28,30,29,165472,9625,10712,165473,10480,62,20206
post-418279","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-florida","tag-aaron-chiles","tag-aaron-philo","tag-bryce-thornton","tag-dallas-wilson","tag-eli-drinkwitz","tag-florida","tag-florida-headlines","tag-florida-news","tag-jvari-flowers","tag-jadan-baugh","tag-jon-sumrall","tag-memorial-stadium","tag-missouri-tigers","tag-sec","tag-vernell-brown-iii
["GET
