NBC 6 reported<\/a>. <\/p>\nThree belong to the St. Lucie County Sheriff\u2019s Office, which confirmed it is investigating why its equipment was installed without permits.<\/p>\n
Ownership of the other 10 remains unresolved. Officials are also trying to determine who installed those devices and who has access to any information they collected.<\/p>\n
County Communications Director Erick Gill said the cameras were placed within county rights-of-way. Removal notices give their owners 30 days to take them down.<\/p>\n
Ricky Mathura, who works opposite one of the devices, told NBC 6 he first spotted it in late August. He questioned who operates the camera and how its recordings are handled, while saying a public safety purpose would be acceptable.<\/p>\n
The discovery follows a separate Florida Department of Transportation directive requiring license plate readers in state road rights-of-way to be removed by September 30. The cameras described in NBC 6\u2019s report sit along county-controlled roads.<\/p>\n
The county had already taken steps to end camera use on its roads. According to the St. Lucie Voice, commissioners approved removal in a 3-2 vote on September 1.<\/p>\n
Commissioners James Clasby, Larry Leet and Erin Lowry supported removal, citing surveillance and free speech concerns. Chair Jamie Lee Fowler and Commissioner Cathy Townsend opposed the measure, pointing to investigative benefits and seeking further discussion with police leaders.<\/p>\n
