Magic<\/a> guard Anthony Black<\/a> was able to participate in more of Monday\u2019s practice at the AdventHealth Training Center<\/a>, but his status for Orlando<\/a>\u2018s first preseason game at Memphis on Wednesday night is still up in the air.<\/p>\n

As the Magic competed in full-court drills Monday, Black, who missed last week\u2019s training camp because of a minor sprained ankle, took part in additional live action work, coach Sean Sweeney<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe looked good,\u201d Sweeney said. \u201cHe had a good burst when he was out there, so that was good to see.\u201d<\/p>\n

Black spoke to the media after practice for the first time since returning to the court over the weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was my first time missing camp so it\u2019s been tough,\u201d he said. \u201cBut (the) training staff\u2019s doing a good job helping me get back right. Just still pretty invested in practice. (I\u2019m) feeling better and looking to keep making strides.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 6-foot-7 guard, who\u2019s entering his fourth season in the NBA<\/a>, was asked by the Orlando Sentinel whether he plans to play in Orlando\u2019s first preseason game Wednesday against the Grizzlies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how I\u2019m going to feel after kind of ramping up the next couple of days, but (I\u2019m) definitely looking forward to getting back out there as soon as possible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In addition to working back from a minor ankle sprain, Black is eligible to sign a rookie-scale contract extension before the start of the regular season. The Magic and Black face an Oct. 19 deadline (by 6 p.m.) to reach a deal, or he\u2019d become a restricted free agent next summer.<\/p>\n

After facing the Grizzlies on Wednesday night, the Magic will play the Cavaliers twice later this week for preseason contests. Orlando travels to Cleveland on Sunday before it hosts the Cavs next Tuesday at Kia Center.<\/p>\n

The Magic then wrap up the preseason by hosting the Heat on Oct. 16. Orlando opens the regular season Oct. 21 against the Hawks.<\/p>\n

Black discussed what he and his teammates hope to get out of Orlando\u2019s four preseason games.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the preseason, I think it would just be good for us, learning the system,\u201d he said. \u201cFor me individually, I haven\u2019t been practicing so I\u2019ve just been watching. It\u2019ll be good for me to kind of get some full live-game speed reps and just continue to know our offense better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even though he missed time last week, Black still remained engaged with the rest of the team as Orlando\u2019s new coaching staff began to install its offensive and defensive systems under Sweeney\u2019s guidance.<\/p>\n

Sweeney highlighted assistant coach Ben Johnson as one staff member who helped Black specifically.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he\u2019s been out keeping engaged, Ben Johnson\u2019s done a really good job,\u201d Sweeney said. \u201cJohnson\u2019s done a good job asking him questions. And to be honest, (Anthony) has done a good job himself. He\u2019s really trying to pay attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things that we\u2019ve seen from these guys when they aren\u2019t involved in drill work (is that) they good a great job of asking questions and being attentive, wanting to get things right when they are out there. And he\u2019s done that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Black shared insight into what he\u2019s noticed about Sweeney\u2019s coaching style.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe attention to detail and just edge,\u201d the Magic guard said. \u201cThe same edge he asks us to play with, he brings every day (and) the rest of the coaches bring every day. Just high intensity, high focus, and just being real intentional on the things that we know we need to do as a team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Suggs update<\/p>\n

For the second day in a row Magic guard Jalen Suggs<\/a> was not seen during the media-viewing session of practice Monday, but not because of an injury.<\/p>\n

Suggs continues to be a little under the weather, but \u201cit sounds like he\u2019s taking a turn for better,\u201d Sweeney said.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust making sure his health is prioritized,\u201d the Magic coach said about Suggs. \u201cHe can do a little bit, but not much right now. I think he\u2019ll get back into it (Tuesday). We\u2019ll get him going, but he\u2019s doing good.\u201d<\/p>\n
