A person identifying herself as the owner of the BMW spoke with an employee and arranged to pick up the vehicle.

At about noon, a woman from Miami arrived at the tow yard to get the BMW, identifying herself as the owner. While she was getting items from the vehicle, two other people pulled up and said they had been driving the BMW before it was towed, according to a redacted incident report.

The employee who had spoken to the BMW owner heard the argument and went outside to tell everyone to calm down, but as she approached the group, the Miami woman pulled out a gun and shot at another woman before getting into a vehicle and fleeing.

It’s still unclear if anyone or anything was hit by gunfire.

The woman who worked there ran back into the office, according to the incident report.

The tow yard is about a half-mile from Murray Middle School, so the Sheriff’s Office activated an “active-shooter response” and placed the school on lockdown as deputies responded to the tow yard.

Road patrol deputies, detectives, aviation, and other sheriff’s units started looking for the Miami woman. Deputies found her driving on Cove Road near U.S. 1 and attempted a traffic stop, the sheriff’s office posted on social media.

She fled, and deputies performed a PIT maneuver, which stopped the vehicle. A PIT, or Precision Immobilization Technique, is often used by law enforcement officers to strike the side-rear of a vehicle, causing it to swing around and come to an unplanned stop.

The woman was taken into custody and taken to the Sheriff’s Office, where detectives questioned her. Her name was redacted from the incident report.

About 1:15 p.m. Oct 2 Martin County deputies went to Gary’s Towing to secure the area with crime scene tape and make sure there was no one there who needed medical attention.

The people targeted by the fired shots had left the area before deputies arrived.

One of the people, a woman, apparently called the business and the employee handed the phone to a deputy, according to the report.

The woman on the phone told him someone had been robbed the night before and she tried to speak to the owner of the vehicle, but she was shot at.

All information and evidence collected at the tow yard was turned over to the sheriff’s criminal investigation division. The case is still open, according to Martin County Sheriff’s officials Oct. 5.

Olivia Franklin is TCPalm’s trending and breaking news reporter.
