ORACLE GRAPHIC / VIOLET VASQUEZ PIMENTEL

Greek life has become almost synonymous with the American college experience. Movies like The House Bunny, Legally Blonde or even Neighbors have helped create a familiar image of college: fraternity houses, sorority recruitment, themed parties and philanthropy events.

For many students, that image is not entirely fictional. Joining a fraternity or sorority can mean finding a community and a sense of belonging.

But behind the parties and philanthropy events is another side of Greek culture that is hardest to romanticize: hazing, excessive drinking, sexual assault, drugging and the pressure to conform.

The problem is not whether Greek life can create meaningful experiences. It definitely can. The real issue is what happens when the culture surrounding those experiences makes harmful behavior seem normal — or makes students afraid to speak up when something goes wrong.

At USF, that tension was on display this September during National Hazing Prevention Week. From Sep. 21-25, USF held events including a hazing-awareness walkthrough, and “Traveling Through the Haze,” an interactive program built around real-life hazing scenarios.

The programming is encouraging, but it is concerning that a university needs an entire week to teach students that hurting someone should not be a requirement for belonging.

RELATED: AEPi president arrested on false imprisonment, battery charges

Hazing is any activity or behaviour required of someone as part of joining or maintaining membership in a group that humiliates, intimidates, degrades or puts them at risk, according to The University of Virginia.

It is often misunderstood as something that only becomes harmful when someone is physically forced or openly threatened.

However, participation does not necessarily mean that the activity is safe, voluntary or acceptable.

That distinction matters because hazing rarely presents itself as someone saying, “I am going to hurt you.”

Instead, it can be disguised as tradition — Drink this. Do this. Prove yourself. Don’t tell anyone. Everyone before you did it. You agreed to join.

According to a 2008 national study by researchers Elizabeth Allan and Mary Madden, 55% of college students involved in clubs, teams or organizations experienced hazing, with the rate rising to 73% among fraternity and sorority members.

The pressure to conform is exactly what makes hazing different from other types of peer pressure. A student who has spent weeks trying to earn acceptance from a group may not feel as though saying “no” is actually an option.

That is where the line between “college fun” and something more dangerous begins to blur.

Another concern surrounding party culture is the risk of drink spiking, which can leave students unable to make informed decisions or recognize when they are being harmed.

When students are taught that fraternity parties are simply places where they should “watch their drinks,” responsibility quietly shifts from the person committing the act to the person at risk of being victimized.

The message becomes: protect yourself better, but prevention cannot stop there. The responsibility for a safe party cannot belong exclusively to the person holding the cup.

The concern is especially relevant within Greek life, where research suggests that drugging can be connected to the drinking culture surrounding fraternity and sorority events.

In a 2017 study published in the Journal of School Violence, researchers examined 6,931 undergraduate students and found that Greek life membership and binge drinking were associated with higher rates of reported drugging victimization.

Those numbers do not mean every fraternity is dangerous or every Greek-affiliated student is at greater risk. What they do mean is that dismissing concerns about Greek party culture as stereotypes is not supported by the research.

RELATED: USF beach volleyball player creates company to test spiked drinks

USF is not alone in confronting these concerns.

In 2024, a Cornell University student reported that she was drugged and sexually assaulted at a Chi Phi fraternity house.

She later filed a lawsuit alleging that she was given drugs and alcohol before being assaulted by multiple fraternity members. The fraternity was subsequently shut down, while the allegations remain disputed.

This case shows how quickly a night centered around partying can become something far more serious when someone’s ability to consent is compromised.

This is where incidents involving individual Greek members become important.

At USF, Alpha Epsilon Pi president Carson Foster was arrested Sept. 15 and faces charges of false imprisonment and battery, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

An arrest does not establish guilt, nor does one member’s alleged conduct automatically represent an entire organization.

But cases like this raise questions that go beyond the individual charged, including what the organization knew, when concerns were reported and how those around the situation responded.

Those questions matter more than an organization’s philanthropy hours or recruitment numbers. Community involvement can be meaningful, but it does not replace accountability when serious allegations arise.

Because philanthropy does not cancel out misconduct.

The easiest response to these problems would be to say that Greek life itself is the problem, but that would be too simple.

For many students, fraternities and sororities genuinely provide belonging. USF itself promotes Greek organizations as communities centered around leadership, service and personal development.

The harder question is whether those benefits require the parts of Greek culture that can repeatedly put students at risk.

They shouldn’t.

A student should not have to drink until they black out to prove loyalty. They should not have to tolerate humiliation to earn membership.

They should not have to worry that their drink at a party has been tampered with. They should not have to choose between reporting harmful behavior and keeping their friends.

And they certainly should not have to accept any of those things as “just part of the college experience.”

USF’s National Hazing Prevention Week slogan is ultimately about more than hazing, it is about culture.

Changing Greek life is not simply about teaching students what the rules are, it is about changing what students believe they have to tolerate to belong.

Until students can say “no” without fearing that they will lose their place in the community, the question is not whether Greek life creates belonging.

It is what that belonging is costing them and others.

Hazing, drink spiking and sexual misconduct show why Greek organizations need to look beyond protecting their reputations and…

[10
135,137,136
post-420293","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tampa","tag-tampa","tag-tampa-headlines","tag-tampa-news
["GET
