Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon visited Fort Pierce on Tuesday to speak with voters about reproductive health care, the economy, and other issues as part of her campaign across Florida ahead of the general election.

Nixon, who represents a Jacksonville-area district in the Florida House of Representatives and describes herself as a Democratic Socialist, is holding town hall meetings across the state to connect with voters.

Planned Parenthood President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson hosted the Fort Pierce town hall, focusing on reproductive freedom and Florida’s maternal mortality crisis. McGill Johnson and Nixon outlined the leadership they believe Florida families need, including protecting abortion access and expanding comprehensive health care services statewide.

“Representative Nixon is a true champion for reproductive freedom,” McGill Johnson said. “In the Senate, she is going to stand up for affordable health care and our right to make our own decisions about our own bodies.”

During the event, Nixon addressed a question about a proposed Islamic center approved for construction in Palm Beach County.

“This is a country where folks should have freedom of religion,” Nixon said. “I would speak out against that type of opposition and hate if it was directed at a synagogue being built, if it was directed at a church being built, if it was directed at any other spiritual facility.”

Nixon also discussed the state of reproductive health care in Florida and other issues raised by voters.

“Gas is high, people are struggling to get to and from work, and then they can’t even afford the food anymore, let alone taking their children to the movies or out to eat, that’s null and void now,” one voter said.

Nixon won the Democratic primary in St. Lucie County with about 54% of the vote. When asked how she plans to close the gap between herself and Republican incumbent Ashley Moody, Nixon said she intends to continue engaging with voters, including those who may disagree with her.

“They have someone who is going to put them first,” Nixon said when asked about the message she hopes attendees took away from Tuesday’s event.

She added that her campaign for U.S. Senate is focused on putting money back in people’s pockets.

Nixon spoke with voters for about an hour. Her next stop is in the Orlando area.
