TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WWSB) – Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday declared a state of emergency for 25 Florida counties as Tropical Depression Nine is forecast to strengthen and approach the Gulf Coast later this week.

The order allows the Florida Division of Emergency Management and the State Emergency Response Team to stage resources ahead of potential impacts.

DeSantis said the move will help position critical supplies and speed up any response.

“Today, I signed an Executive Order issuing a state of emergency ahead of potential impacts from Tropical Depression 9,” DeSantis said in a statement. “This order will allow the Florida Division of Emergency Management to stage critical preparedness resources and ensure Florida is ready to respond. Floridians should take this time to get disaster plans in place and ensure their hurricane supply kit is stocked.”

State emergency officials said generators, fuel, flood barriers, boxed water, shelf‑stable meals, flood buckets, tarps, Tiger Dams and sandbags will be staged in the Tallahassee and Santa Rosa areas for rapid deployment.

The current forecast shows a tropical storm or hurricane could make landfall somewhere along the central Gulf Coast later this week. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, coastal flooding and isolated tornadoes are possible across North Florida, officials said. Additional rain could worsen flooding after recent significant rainfall.

The state of emergency covers Baker, Bay, Calhoun, Columbia, Dixie, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gilchrist, Gulf, Hamilton, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Suwannee, Taylor, Walton, Wakulla and Washington counties.
