{"id":420971,"date":"2026-10-07T06:16:27","date_gmt":"2026-10-07T06:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/420971\/"},"modified":"2026-10-07T06:16:27","modified_gmt":"2026-10-07T06:16:27","slug":"donna-deegan-encourages-jacksonville-board-appointees-to-get-financial-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/420971\/","title":{"rendered":"Donna Deegan &#8216;encourages&#8217; Jacksonville board appointees to get financial training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jacksonville Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/820977-donna-deegan-says-political-pressure-led-to-jea-ceo-vickie-caveys-exit\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Donna Deegan<\/a> wants appointees to the boards of JTA, JEA and other independent agencies to learn something about municipal finance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Deegan made comments in the wake of reductions in staff and service at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaxdailyrecord.com\/news\/2026\/sep\/17\/jta-reducing-more-services-laying-off-employees-to-address-further-budget-concerns\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Jacksonville Transportation Authority<\/a> driven by a deficit and persistent rate hikes at JEA. Her remarks suggested that they don\u2019t quite know enough for the job in some cases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOur board members are citizen volunteers who give their time to serve this city, and they deserve every tool we can provide them to do that job well,\u201d Deegan said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTaxpayers deserve confidence that the people overseeing their money understand the budgets, audits, and ethics rules in front of them. This order puts that training within reach today. Working with the City Council, we\u2019ll make these standards permanent through legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pending a bill to codify the standards, the Mayor can only suggest process improvements.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdwcommunications.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-797823 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MDW_728x90_2026.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These include governance and audit training covering fiduciary duties, internal and external audits, internal controls and fraud awareness, Florida\u2019s Sunshine Law, public records laws, and state and city ethics rules.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chief Financial Officer\u00a0Anna Brosche\u2019s Office will be charged with training board members of agencies that want the help, once a 90-day ramp-up period ends. Starting next year, board members will learn how to read financial statements.
