The bus also slammed head-on into an oncoming Jeep, setting it on fire.

The crash killed two people — identified for the first time Tuesday as Winter Haven High School sophomore Adinaluz Prieto Oyola, 16, and the Jeep’s driver, 26-year-old Deshawn Smith of Haines City — and injured dozens of others.

The chaos was captured on the bus’ dashboard and internal surveillance cameras and publicly released at a press conference by Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

The other victims were treated at several area hospitals and are expected to recover.

Judd, flanked by Superintendent Fred Heid and a slew of other officials, also confirmed the identity of the driver who caused the crash, a 23-year-old nurse who drove the Malibu on her way to work at the time who is now cooperating with investigators.

“There won’t be any criminal charges at this point of the investigation, unless something turns up that we’re unaware of now,” Judd said, which he added could take months to complete. The Orlando Sentinel is not publishing the driver’s name as no arrest was made.

According to Judd, the driver does not remember what led to the crash and was driving under the speed limit when it took place. The investigation’s early stages further concluded she was not using her phone at the time.

Judd urged people to donate to the families either through online fundraisers or through Polk Sheriff’s Charities. The website includes an option in its drop-menu for donations to go toward “Assistance for Winter Haven Bus Crash Fatality Victims.”

The funds will be split and directed to the victims’ families.

Superintendent Fred Heid choked back tears as he described Adinaluz, the teen victim, as being beloved by her teachers and classmates. She is survived, among other relatives, by her brother, a recent Winter Haven High School graduate.

Her family was given her belongings yesterday, including her cellphone, which was “full of messages from her friends, loved ones, those checking on her initially and those sending goodbye messages after the fact,” Heid said.

“As a father, I can’t even imagine the pain that that family is going through,” he added.

Adinaluz was slated to attend her first day of cheerleading practice the day of the crash. A GoFundMe campaign set up by her family, which has raised more than $25,000 as of Tuesday afternoon, further describes her as “loving, joyful and always willing to help others.”

“She had so many dreams ahead of her,” the page said.

Smith, the second victim, was on his way to work at the time of the crash.

“He was not speeding. He was minding his business. He was doing what Americans do, they get up in the morning and they go to work,” Judd said of Smith. “… Certainly, we don’t want to forget him and his family in this horrible tragedy as well.”

Heid also highlighted the courage of the bus driver, two witnesses and other students moving quickly to evacuate the remaining people off the bus.

One boy who saw Adinaluz was not moving, Heid recalled, stayed with her body after initial attempts to move her failed. He was heard in an unreleased recording saying, “Don’t worry, I won’t leave you.”

“There are some amazing people in our community,” Heid said. “These students put others before their own safety, and for that we are truly grateful. That’s what makes our community strong: the people who are willing to run in and fill the gap when it’s desperately needed and when nobody is looking.”

It happened in the blink of an eye.
