Capybaras don’t belong in cafes

Capybaras are highly social animals with complex needs, not props designed to generate viral content. Businesses that encourage the public to pet, feed, and handle wild animals put profits ahead of the animals’ welfare. Reports surrounding Fort Lauderdale’s Capybara Cafe have raised serious concerns about the facility’s legality and the treatment and housing of the animals (“PETA demands Fort Lauderdale officials shut down petting zoo Capybara Café,” Oct. 3).

Wild animals don’t belong in cafes, where they’re subjected to constant noise, crowds, and unwanted interactions.

The public should support genuine sanctuaries that prioritize animals’ well-being, not businesses that treat sensitive, intelligent animals as hands-on entertainment. Compassion means allowing animals to live as nature intended, not as props for selfies or entertainment.

— Philip Tripp, Largo

Tenn. botched execution teaches a lesson

Perhaps the botched execution of Christa Pike by the state of Tennessee is in fact a blessing in disguise for the state and for those who favor the death penalty.

The common justification for capital punishment is rooted in the passage in Exodus: “eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.” Conveniently, those who advocate for such punishment ignore the passage in Romans 12:19, part of which states “vengeance is mine, saith the Lord.”

On the day of the scheduled execution, Pike survived the two doses of phenobarbital that the state administered. I believe Tennessee would have perhaps gotten an extra measure of vengeance if Pike had been reduced to a vegetative state. Perhaps they could have tried again, by propping her up in front of a firing squad, or pushing her in her wheelchair off a mountaintop.

Some advocates for capital punishment might not feel guilt or remorse; she wouldn’t have felt a thing.

— Russ Kesler, Orlando

Amendment 3 needs more discussion

Anyone with a sledgehammer can suddenly decide to demolish their bathroom. If they have not formulated a plan to rebuild the bathroom, they have a problem.

That is the scenario that has been created by the Legislature in writing Amendment 3. As far as I can tell, little thought has been given to the ramifications when local governments have such a sudden loss of revenue. Everyone is guessing what will happen. The governor, the Legislature, local government, and, most importantly, the voters.

Property taxes, at the end of the day, are a level stream of funds that are controlled locally. This issue deserves careful, thoughtful study. Not a quick body of work during a special session that needed a hurried court-ordered rewrite before it could go on the ballot

Hold off. Take the time to create an informed solution to a complicated issue. Make sure the toilet keeps working.

— Greg Epps, New Smyrna Beach
