I was 29 years old, coming to town for a job interview at Channel 4, and what I remembered growing up in Orlando when passing through Jacksonville was… What is that smell?<\/p>\n
If you\u2019ve lived here long enough, you probably know exactly what I\u2019m talking about.<\/p>\n
But by the next morning, I had a job offer.<\/p>\n
And as I started looking around, something about Jacksonville felt right. It wasn\u2019t too big. It wasn\u2019t too small.<\/p>\n
Jacksonville was just my size.<\/p>\n

I came here for a job.<\/p>\n
I had no idea Jacksonville was about to give me a life.<\/p>\n
Twenty-one years later, this is where I built my career. It\u2019s where I met and married my husband, Tarik. It\u2019s where we\u2019re raising our children. It\u2019s where I found a church home, made lifelong friends and became part of a community that has trusted me with its stories.<\/p>\n

And on Oct. 29, it\u2019s where I\u2019ll turn 50.<\/p>\n
So when I started thinking about how I wanted to celebrate this milestone, I knew I wanted to do something different.<\/p>\n
A longtime friend gave me an idea.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy don\u2019t you do a one-woman show?\u201d<\/p>\n
My immediate reaction?<\/p>\n
No way.<\/p>\n

But then I thought: I could do a community show.<\/p>\n
Because when I look back at my 21 years here, my Jacksonville story has never really been mine alone.<\/p>\n

It belongs to the people I\u2019ve interviewed. The stories I\u2019ve covered. The causes I\u2019ve championed. The moments that made us laugh and the ones that broke our hearts. The people who welcomed the new girl at Channel 4 and the people who, somewhere along the way, stopped treating me like someone they watched on television and started treating me like family.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how \u201cDear Jacksonville: A Love Letter, 21 Years in the Making\u201d was born.<\/p>\n
Then people started saying yes.<\/p>\n
What began as a birthday idea has grown into something I couldn\u2019t have imagined.<\/p>\n
I was recently asked, \u201cWhen did this get so big?\u201d<\/p>\n
I said: \u201cWhen people started saying yes.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Ritz Theatre was my first yes, when I was just pitching the idea and the creative director, Dr. Shaun Powell, said, \u201cI\u2019ll add it to the calendar.\u201d<\/p>\n
My producer, Traci Henderson Smith, said yes. PRI said yes. Singers, dancers, comedians and students started saying yes.<\/p>\n
And now the tickets are selling.<\/p>\n
That part still gets me.<\/p>\n
Because on Oct. 29, I won\u2019t simply be standing onstage telling you about Jacksonville.<\/p>\n
Jacksonville will be on that stage with me.<\/p>\n
The evening will include people who represent different chapters of my journey, including vocalist Akia Uwanda<\/a>, Comedian A-Train<\/a>, Meachum L. Clarke and Company<\/a>, Dancers from Jacksonville Centre for the Arts<\/a>, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts<\/a> students and a few surprises I\u2019m not ready to give away just yet.<\/p>\n There are stories I\u2019ve never told you.<\/p>\n If you\u2019ve watched me on News4JAX over the years, you know pieces of my story.<\/p>\n But you don\u2019t know all of it.<\/p>\n We\u2019ll talk about what it was like to arrive here at 29. About falling in love. About family and motherhood. About my hair and what happened when I decided to wear it naturally on television. About journalism and some of the stories that have stayed with me long after the cameras stopped rolling.<\/p>\n We\u2019ll laugh.<\/p>\n We\u2019ll probably cry.<\/p>\n And I\u2019ll tell you some things I\u2019ve never told publicly before.<\/p>\n But this isn\u2019t a retrospective of my television career.<\/p>\n It\u2019s a story about becoming.<\/p>\n About what happens when you arrive somewhere thinking it\u2019s just the next stop and wake up two decades later realizing that place helped make you who you are.<\/p>\n A celebration with a purpose There was one more thing I knew about this birthday.<\/p>\n If I was going to celebrate what Jacksonville has given me, I wanted the night to give something back.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/7X2ZH35KVNGVLIYW7NDAF6EJHM.jpg\"\/)
