Alongside Principal Matt Miller, Superintendent Dr. Denise Carlin, and my fellow board members, we had the distinct honor of cutting the ribbon on the magnificent, newly rebuilt Cypress Lake Middle School.

This state-of-the-art, $100.6 million project was made possible by your support of the 2018 voter-approved half-cent sales tax. Thank you, community—it is because of you that this was made possible. As one of our district’s designated arts centers, this beautiful new campus includes specialized, world-class spaces—such as a doubled dance studio and music room—designed to help our student performers truly flourish in a safe, secure, and modern learning environment. With the new school, there are two new programs being offered for next year: Environmental Water and Reclamation, and Culinary Academies. This is very exciting for the Cypress Lake Middle School community. While final property cleanups and minor construction will continue through February 2027, our Panthers are officially moving into their new home this month!

6th Grade Advantage This transition is an opportunity for the district to demonstrate to families our commitment to safety and security, with a gentle transition into academic and social environments tailored specifically to pre-teens stepping into middle school. We dedicate physical spaces and schedules with tailored counseling, 6th-grade PE, and a focus on core classes that set a strong academic foundation with specialized support staff for student-focused success.

Parent Engagement October is also Parent Engagement Month! Parent engagement is a proven measure of student achievement. The statistics are clear: students whose parents are involved in their education perform better on standardized tests, earn higher grades, and have fewer behavioral issues. Less than half of parents nationwide, however, get involved. The FOCUS Parent Portal is the easiest way for a parent to engage in their child’s education. It allows parents to view assignments and grades, along with interim, quarter, and semester report cards. Look for a series of videos on how to create an account, add a student to an account, or link students to an account that will be posted to encourage each parent to create one. Volunteers are always needed in our schools. All it takes is a call to your student’s school to get involved.

Addressing Challenges with Transparency While we celebrate these long-term facility improvements, I also want to acknowledge that our district is navigating some complex challenges right now. I know many of you have questions and concerns regarding student services, class sizes, and potential staff layoffs.

As our official student enrollment counts are finalized, we are working within strict budgetary and state-mandated funding constraints that directly correspond to these enrollment numbers. Please know that your Board and administration are working closely together to manage these difficult adjustments as mindfully as possible. Our top priority remains protecting the quality of classroom instruction and ensuring our schools have the stability they need to succeed. We appreciate your patience and trust as we navigate these operational decisions.

Looking Ahead to Holiday Breaks As we look past these current adjustments and head toward the upcoming holiday season, I want to emphasize how important it is for our entire school family to rest, recharge, and enjoy the scheduled breaks. To help your family plan ahead, please make note of our upcoming district closures:

Thanksgiving Break: Monday, November 23 – Friday, November 27, 2026 (Schools Closed)
Winter Break: Monday, December 21, 2026 – Friday, January 1, 2027 (Schools Closed)

Note: Monday, January 4, 2027, is a Professional Duty Day (No school for students), and classes officially resume on Tuesday, January 5, 2027.

When these holiday breaks arrive, I encourage all our families, staff, and students to unplug, step away from daily routines, and spend meaningful, uninterrupted quality time together. Cherishing these moments with family and friends is vital for our collective well-being.

Thank you for your continued partnership, investment, and dedication to the success of our students. I wish you all a joyful, safe, and warm start to the holiday season.
Respectfully,

Melisa W. Giovannelli
School Board Member, District 2

The content and any opinions expressed in this article are solely the author’s and do not necessarily reflect the facts, opinions, and beliefs of the Lee County School Board or its affiliates.

Dear Lee County Community, As we move deeper into autumn, I want to take a moment to connect…

[14
209,211,210
post-421341","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-cape-coral","tag-cape-coral","tag-cape-coral-headlines","tag-cape-coral-news
["GET
