Officers said the teen was struck from behind by a 2002 Ford Excursion driven by a 72-year-old man. The driver initially believed he had hit a construction barrel and did not realize he had struck a person, according to investigators.

Police said the driver made a U-turn at the next available location where he could safely turn around. He returned to the area, activated his hazard lights, and found the teen unconscious on the side of the road.

The driver called 911 and has remained cooperative with investigators, police said.

Investigators have not observed any apparent signs of impairment involving the driver. Police emphasized that assessment is preliminary and could change as the investigation continues.

The teen suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition. The investigation remains active.
