Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is demanding the cancellation of a Christmas-themed drag show in Pensacola, accusing the event of being obscene and \u201copenly anti-Christian.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a letter to the Pensacola City Council dated November 7, Uthmeier asked the Council to cancel a performance of \u201cA Drag Queen Christmas,\u201d<\/a> a nationally touring drag show that\u2019s planned to take place at the city-owned Saenger Theatre on December 23. The show features a lineup of RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race luminaries including Bosco<\/a>, Suzie Toot<\/a>, Shea Coule<\/a>\u00e9, Lexi<\/a>, and host Nina West \u2014 who Uthmeier referred to in his letter as \u201cmen dressed as garish women in demonic costumes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The attorney general specifically flagged Toot as the \u201cdemonic Betty Bop,\u201d apparently referring to, but misspelling, Toot\u2019s Vogue photoshoot as Betty Boop<\/a>. Uthmeier also denounced performer Crystal Methyd\u2019s \u201cglamorous\u201d devil drag in Rolling Stone<\/a> and alleged that Trinity \u201cThe Tuck\u201d Taylor \u2014 who appeared in the show\u2019s 2021 revue, but is not on the bill for 2025 \u2014 named herself \u201cTrinity\u201d as a \u201cnot-so-subtle stab at the fundamental doctrine of Christianity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uthmeier\u2019s letter, which he also posted to X<\/a>, claimed the show \u201copenly mocks one of the most sacred holidays in the Christian faith,\u201d and called on the city council \u2014 which owns the 100-year-old historic theater \u2014 to cancel the performance by declaring it \u201cinjurious to the public health, safety, or general welfare of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch city-sanctioned religious mockery may amount to religious discrimination,\u201d Uthmeier claimed in his letter, going on to baselessly speculate that any of the performers could \u201cexpose themselves to the kids innocently enjoying Christmas festivities\u201d near the theater. \u201cThe show\u2019s content is designed to inflame religious strife, its timing is intentional, and its proximity to children is unacceptably problematic,\u201d he added. (The show is advertised \u201c18+ welcome\u201d on the Saenger Theatre website<\/a> and Ticketmaster.)<\/p>\n

\u201c[H]onestly, if this were a nativity play and we were \u2018men in dresses\u2019 portraying the wisemen or angels, no one would bat an eye,\u201d Lexi told The Advocate<\/a> in a statement on Friday, calling Uthmeier\u2019s description of the event inaccurate. \u201cThey\u2019d probably praise it. The double standard is obvious.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the Pensacola News Journal<\/a> noted, Uthmeier\u2019s letter is not an official opinion<\/a> from the AG\u2019s office, which would carry more legal weight. Council meetings have for months<\/a> seen other religious conservatives object to the show, including former state Rep. Mike Hill, who told the council in September that allowing the show would invite \u201cGod\u2019s judgment and retribution,\u201d according to WUWF<\/a>. At the same meeting, City Attorney Adam Cobb reportedly warned that canceling the show\u2019s contract could expose the city to lawsuits on contractual or constitutional grounds.<\/p>\n
