Baker County, Florida and Camden County, Georgia emergency managers say Hurricane Isaias may stay west of the area, but the rain that\u2019s already fallen this week could make local flooding happen faster if more bands move through.<\/p>\n

In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency<\/a> that includes Baker and Columbia counties.<\/p>\n

The executive order says a stalled frontal system produced widespread heavy rainfall across portions of North Florida \u2014 with five to nine inches reported in some areas \u2014 leading to saturated soils, elevated water levels and overwhelmed drainage systems. The order warns additional heavy rain could increase the risk of flash flooding and river flooding.<\/p>\n

Baker County Emergency Management Director John Blanchard said the saturation is already affecting some roadways.<\/p>\n

\u201cSmaller cars are having a hard time going up and down them. Some of them are even getting stuck,\u201d Blanchard said.<\/p>\n

Blanchard said the St. Marys River has been a major focus for the county, and that more rain could raise flooding concerns for low-lying and flood-prone areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re subject to flooding, please make preparations. Now\u2026 today is really the day to do that,\u201d Blanchard said.<\/p>\n

Across the state line, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp issued a statewide state of emergency for Hurricane Isaias<\/a>. The order cites the potential for strong winds, tornadoes, and periods of heavy rain, noting that even with the storm expected to move quickly, flash flooding is possible in areas that have already received several inches of rain.<\/p>\n

In Camden County, EMA Director Chuck White said they\u2019ve already had multiple days of inclement conditions. He said a mix of rain and tidal influences has made drainage more difficult.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo all hands on deck making sure that we\u2019re staying safe for the traveling public,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

White said Camden County has not declared a local state of emergency at this time, but he said the governor\u2019s statewide order helps the state move quickly if resources are needed.<\/p>\n

White said Camden County is also watching for tornadoes that can spin up with tropical systems.<\/p>\n

Both emergency managers said residents should stay plugged into official updates and local alert systems and avoid driving into flooded roadways.<\/p>\n
