That was until I was thrust into a simulated domestic violence scenario and my only choice of instinct was to sink or swim.

Learning to think quickly on my feet and make a split decision that could change everything was one of the many things I gained while taking part in the Day as Deputy event that morning. And while I wish I could say I did an absolutely fantastic job, that would not be the truth.

I am absolutely nowhere near as brave as your average first responder. I have no idea where to start when deescalating intense crises. I’m definitely not as situationally aware as I thought. And I’ve never had to wonder daily, “How can I make sure I make it home tonight.”

But I certainly know who does.

For five hours, a group of every day citizens learned what life behind the badge is all about. We joined Sheriff Michelle Cook and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office to tackle real-world scenarios hands-on and gain valuable insights into what it’s like to be a modern-day cop.

That meant participating in interactive use-of-force and simulation training.

We conducted traffic stops – some that went wrong, learned how to use sim-guns, managed individuals in acute distress, dealt with aggressive and armed “suspects” and to deal with potential threats before they even happen.

We also learned about emerging issues impacting law enforcement in public safety in Clay County. Like the fact that current staffing at the Sheriff’s Office is below the average for Clay County’s population. And deputy pay remains less than neighboring counties.

And while operating costs continue to increase, CCSO is standing firm on its mission to push for a Public Safety Complex to address an overflowing jail and the deteriorating conditions of some of the agency’s buildings.

Talk about difficult circumstances.

Yet they still make the choice to put their lives on the line and ensure public safety in the place that they call home. And they do it with pride and a willingness that’s incomparable.

That day, me and the many others that decided to take on the challenge tried our hardest to protect and serve just like those with a badge. And even though I clearly have some brushing up to do on my skills, I’m glad I did it. If the event taught me one thing: I appreciate those who take on that challenge every day.

That was until I was thrust into a simulated domestic violence scenario and my only choice of instinct…

[8
3496,3487,3495,3498,3488,3493,116,118,117,3492,3494,3499,3490,3489,3497,3491
post-422845","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-jacksonville","tag-argyle","tag-clay-county","tag-doctors-inlet","tag-eagle-harbor","tag-fleming-island","tag-green-cove-springs","tag-jacksonville","tag-jacksonville-headlines","tag-jacksonville-news","tag-keystone-heights","tag-lake-asbury","tag-margaret","tag-middleburg","tag-orange-park","tag-pace-island","tag-penney-farms
["GET
