Photo by U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service

Oct. 9 (UPI) — U.S. customs officers discovered 21 live birds concealed in the clothing of two passengers arriving separately from Cuba at Miami International Airport, including 10 hidden in tubes sewn into one man’s underwear and 11 carried in a concealed garment, according to federal criminal complaints.

The two men, both Cuban nationals and lawful permanent residents of the United States, were arrested after arriving on flights from Havana on Sunday and Tuesday.

In the first case, Alberto Hernandez Castillo, 40, was stopped Sunday after Customs and Border Protection officers noticed an unexplained bulge near his waist during a secondary inspection, according to NBC 6 South Florida.

Officers had searched his carry-on luggage and a waist bag without finding anything suspicious. But a subsequent pat-down revealed six clear plastic tubes wrapped in tape and concealed in pockets sewn into his underwear.

The tubes contained 10 live birds: eight yellow-faced grassquits and two blue grosbeaks, according to the criminal complaint.

Hernandez Castillo had declared that he was not bringing animals or wildlife into the United States. When questioned about the birds, he said they were for personal use before invoking his right to remain silent.

Federal investigators said he lacked the documentation required to import the animals.

Two days later, customs officers discovered another 11 birds concealed in the clothing of Roberto Perez Quincosa, who arrived Tuesday on a separate flight from Havana.

According to NBC 6, officers found the birds inside 11 plastic hair-roller tubes bundled together with black electrical tape and hidden beneath his clothing.

The containers had ventilation holes and mesh-like coverings.

The birds included five Cuban bullfinches and six Cuban melodious finches.

Perez Quincosa told investigators he intended to breed and sell the birds in the United States for between $100 and $120 each, according to the arrest affidavit.

Both men face federal charges of smuggling goods into the United States.

Hernandez Castillo was released on a $25,000 personal surety bond and is scheduled to appear in federal court Oct. 26 for arraignment, according to People.

The cases highlight the illegal trade in live songbirds between Cuba and South Florida, where some species are sought for their singing abilities or kept as pets.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating the incidents, according to ABC News.

The arrests also highlight the demand for Cuban songbirds in South Florida, where some birds are kept as pets or bred for sale.

Paul Reillo, a research professor at Florida International University and director of its Tropical Conservation Institute, told the Miami Herald that people caught transporting wildlife are often couriers working within larger trafficking networks.

Reillo said some Cuban immigrants keep songbirds as reminders of their homeland, while others breed them for commercial purposes.

Authorities have not publicly established whether the two men were working together.

The current condition and whereabouts of the 21 birds have not been confirmed.

A melodious finch was among 11 birds smuggled into Miami International Airport from Cuba on Tuesday, the U.S.…

[9
123,125,124
post-423623","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-miami","tag-miami","tag-miami-headlines","tag-miami-news
["GET
