JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Families in the path of Hurricane Isaias are bracing for what the storm will bring.<\/p>\n
While the First Alert Weather Team said we won\u2019t see many direct impacts in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, it\u2019s still a reminder to stay prepared.<\/p>\n
>>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<<<\/a><\/p>\n That includes making sure your important documents and keepsakes are safe.<\/p>\n Action News Jax\u2019s Tenikka Hughes shows you how the Jacksonville Public Library can help you do that for free.<\/p>\n On the fourth floor of the Main Branch of the Jacksonville Public Library, you\u2019ll find the Memory Lab.<\/p>\n Opened in 2022, it\u2019s a place where you can convert old photos, slides, VHS tapes, vinyl records, reels, documents, and more into digital format.<\/p>\n \u201cWhatever you like. You can either bring in your hard drive, USB drives, we can even help you put it on your cloud,\u201d Special Collections Librarian Tatyanna Brash said.<\/p>\n It\u2019s all free with your library card and available during regular hours.<\/p>\n RELATED: Jacksonville Public Library introduces new \u2018memory lab\u2019 to digitize old film and photos<\/a><\/p>\n Brash said the Memory Lab is self-serve, but staff is there to help.<\/p>\n Some of the film and reel-to-reel audio equipment requires an appointment to use.<\/p>\n \u201cSo I just got a quick tutorial from Tatyanna and I\u2019m ready to go,\u201d Hughes said. \u201cI am going to digitize this photo of me from college. This picture is 23 years old, so I\u2019m gonna scan it now, click on fast photo, pop the photo on the scanner, and start scanning. And now we wait.\u201d<\/p>\n Later, Hughes showed the results.<\/p>\n \u201cThe original and the retouch. And it only took a few seconds,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n RELATED: \u2018It just takes you back in time\u2019: New \u2018Memory Lab\u2019 at Jacksonville Public Library digitizes old tape<\/a><\/p>\n It is a simple process that could help you save precious memories or sensitive documents, especially during storm season or in the event of an emergency.<\/p>\n \u201cI think it\u2019s very important, even not only just photos and old film that you have, even your vital records. Bring them in, come get them digitized,\u201d Brash said. \u201cWe\u2019re not saying get rid of your original files, but at least have something backed up in two areas. Keep one on a flash drive, keep one on a hard drive, then keep your physicals. Always remember high and dry.\u201d<\/p>\n Brash said the Memory Lab has even helped to preserve historic records from the basement of City Hall.<\/p>\n [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/a>]<\/p>\n \u201cWe found some mold on some of the documents.
