A shooter accused of killing two people in Port St. Lucie died on Tuesday following a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he barricaded himself at a residence, authorities said.<\/p>\n
The suspect was identified as 62-year-old Paul Maraio.<\/p>\n
According to Port St. Lucie Police, on Monday, officers arrived at the 2700 block of Southeast Tropical Circle after receiving reports of shots being fired.<\/p>\n
Police said there were multiple calls regarding two men who were shot at different places in the community.<\/p>\n
“It appears there was some sort of ongoing neighbor dispute, and something just brought our suspect to the edge where he took things into his own hands,” said Port St Lucie Police Chief Leo Niemczyk. <\/p>\n
Maraio, who lived in the community, took a woman hostage and barricaded himself at a home while he was armed, police said.<\/p>\n
A standoff then ensued as SWAT teams, K-9 units and crisis negotiation teams arrived at the community.<\/p>\n
During the standoff, negotiators attempted to coax Maraio out of the home, and he released the hostage unharmed.<\/p>\n
About an hour of still being barricaded, Maraio told officers that he shot himself in the shot, which was confirmed by an indoor drone used by officers.<\/p>\n
SWAT teams then made their way inside the home, took Maraio into custody and took him to the hospital in critical condition.<\/p>\n
A day later, Maraio succumbed to his injuries.<\/p>\n
