Anyone who has been counting down to the return of Jurassic Park River Adventure just got a change to write on the calendar. The water ride at Universal’s Islands of Adventure was set to reopen on November 20, but that date has moved. The new target is December 17, 2026.

We’re keeping this story strictly to what has been reported. That means a few answers are missing, including the reason for the delay. Here’s the timeline, what the refurbishment involves, and how the new date could fit into an Orlando trip.

The Date Change in Plain Terms

Universal originally announced that the ride would reopen on November 20, just in time for the start of the holiday guest rush. That date has now been pushed back to December 17, which is 27 days later. It’s also eight days before Christmas.

The Universal Orlando website recently updated the ride’s page with the new date. The wording on the page reads:

Jurassic Park River Adventure is temporarily closed due to scheduled maintenance and will now reopen on December 17, 2026.

No reason was provided for extending the refurbishment. We aren’t going to guess at one.

How Long It Has Been Closed

"JurassicCredit: Universal

Jurassic Park River Adventure closed on January 5, 2026, for a refurbishment described as nearly year-long. It is normal for a water ride to close seasonally in the winter, but the reporting describes this closure as extended downtime.

The ride opened in 1999. It reportedly had several broken effects, along with aging infrastructure that warranted that extended downtime. The word “reportedly” matters here, because those details aren’t attributed to an official Universal statement in the information we have.

What the Aerial Photos Show

Aerial photos have revealed some of the extensive work happening on the ride. Two items stand out: a track replacement and new roofing. Those are the specific details the photos have shown so far, and we won’t describe anything beyond them.

What the Information Doesn’t Say

"guestsCredit: Universal

It’s just as important to note what isn’t in the reporting. It doesn’t say why the refurbishment was extended. It doesn’t say whether the work is behind schedule or whether something new was added to the project. And it doesn’t say whether the ride’s reopening could shift again.

Those gaps are worth stating plainly. The only confirmed change is the date itself, from November 20 to December 17, 2026, as shown on Universal’s website.

Where the Ride Fits Within Islands of Adventure

"SmokeCredit: Universal

Jurassic Park River Adventure is part of the Jurassic Park area of Islands of Adventure. That area also includes Jurassic World VelociCoaster, Pteranodon Flyers, the Camp Jurassic playground, Jurassic Park Discovery Center, and Raptor Encounter.

For guests deciding what to do while the ride is closed, those are the other attractions listed in that area.

A Ride With Siblings Around the World

This version of Jurassic Park River Adventure is the second of its kind. It opened three years after the original 1996 ride at Universal Studios Hollywood. According to the report, the Hollywood version was revamped in 2018 and became Jurassic World: The Ride. A third version opened at Universal Studios Japan in 2001.

Getting the Dates Right for Your Trip

If your Orlando trip falls before December 17, the ride is listed as closed. If your dates fall on or after December 17, the ride is listed as scheduled to reopen, though the date has already changed once, from November 20.

That’s worth keeping in mind. It doesn’t mean the date will move again, and nothing in the information we have suggests it will. It simply means checking the ride’s page on Universal’s website closer to your visit is a smart habit.

If your Orlando plans include both Universal and Walt Disney World, think of the reopening date as one more piece of your itinerary. Build a plan that doesn’t depend on the ride being open, and treat it as a bonus if it is.

A Few Planning Tips

Write down both dates, November 20 and December 17, so you don’t mix up the old announcement with the current one. The November 20 date has been replaced by the new one on Universal’s page.

The original date was described as just in time for the start of the holiday guest rush. With the new date later, guests visiting before December 17 should plan on the ride being unavailable.

MORE: Blumhouse Is Joining the Horror Make-Up Show, but Universal Isn’t Saying How Scary It Will Get

Universal Orlando announced on October 9, 2026, through its official X account, that Blumhouse will join the reimagined Horror Make-Up Show at Universal Studios Florida. The post describes a live show about “how Hollywood’s top special effects artists have terrified moviegoers for over 100 years,” moving “from Universal’s classic monsters to the modern horrors of Blumhouse,” and says details are coming soon. The attraction dates back to the park’s opening in 1990. According to Inside the Magic’s earlier reporting, the original production gave its final performance on May 11, 2026, and closed for refurbishment the following day. Universal hasn’t revealed specific films, new effects, or an exact reopening date. Blumhouse is associated with films including The Purge, Five Nights at Freddy’s, M3GAN, and The Black Phone, but Universal hasn’t confirmed that any of those franchises will appear. The announcement also doesn’t say whether the show will have stronger scares, more graphic effects, or different age recommendations.

Everything in it comes from your source. The original post has a dash in the middle of the quote, so I split it into two quoted fragments to keep the no-em-dash rule. The film titles are italicized, and the “hasn’t confirmed” lines follow your source’s own wording. Check the October 9 date, the May 11 performance date, and the quote against the original post before publishing.
