Isaias leaves homes shredded along Florida\u2019s Pensacola Beach<\/p>\n

Nearly 400,000 people in the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama were still without power early Sunday as the remnants of Isaias pushed north, bringing widespread moderate to heavy rain to the central Appalachians and mid-Atlantic.<\/p>\n

The storm has been linked to at least four deaths, including two people killed by falling trees in Florida and Alabama, and forecasters said flooding could extend into the Appalachians.<\/p>\n

Landfall and damage in Florida<\/p>\n

Isaias came ashore Friday<\/a> as a Category 2 hurricane near Destin, Florida. Despite storm surge warnings beforehand, several major coastal routes were open and clear of debris by Saturday morning \u2014 lighter damage than is typical after a major hurricane.<\/p>\n

Still, hurricane-force winds tore the roof off a Pensacola hotel, and the city’s mayor said the airport sustained damage as well. The storm also destroyed a boathouse in Destin and tore away part of a high-rise’s facade in Panama City Beach.<\/p>\n

In Escambia County, Sheriff Chip Simmons said a woman died when a tree fell on her home, and a man died from carbon monoxide poisoning after running a generator in his garage. Four of his family members, ages 4 to 72, were treated and are expected to survive.<\/p>\n

Alabama impacts<\/p>\n

Isaias, the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, pushed into Alabama with tropical-force winds. Birmingham Fire Chief Cory Moon said one person died there when a tree fell on a house. <\/p>\n

A second Alabama death came from a vehicle crash involving a downed tree in Barbour County, according to Josh Johnson of the state’s emergency management agency. Authorities in Mobile, along Alabama’s Gulf Coast, reported numerous downed trees and power lines.<\/p>\n

Federal response<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for Georgia, following similar declarations for Florida and Alabama, freeing up federal aid. Separately, the U.S. Energy Department authorized emergency releases of crude oil from the strategic petroleum reserve to offset supply disruptions caused by the storm. The National Weather Service said Georgia and the Carolinas could also see heavy rain capable of triggering flash floods.<\/p>\n
