(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/\">WWSB<\/a>) &#8211; A 54-year-old Gibsonton man died after a crash early Oct. 10 at the intersection of Gibsonton Drive and U.S. 41, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The crash happened about 3:45 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">FHP said Pablo Mendez-Leyva, 21, of Oregon, was driving a Ford pickup west on Gibsonton Drive when he entered the intersection against a red light. The pickup collided with a Cadillac Escalade traveling north on U.S. 41, troopers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/2026\/10\/12\/road-closed-following-fatal-crash-duette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/2026\/10\/12\/road-closed-following-fatal-crash-duette\/\">Road closed following fatal crash in Duette<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Both drivers were taken to area hospitals. The Escalade driver later died from injuries suffered in the crash, FHP said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Troopers arrested Mendez-Leyva and took him to the Orient Road Jail. He is charged with DUI manslaughter and driving without a license resulting in death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">FHP did not release the name of the man who died.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WWSB.
