Contrary to one of the very first characters he played, Kyle Gordon is far from a kid that’s no fun.

After spending some time doing very niche imitations on TikTok near the end of the pandemic, Gordon, a New York native, started interspersing music into his sketches, which led to his 2024 debut album Kyle Gordon Is Great. That record, along with his follow-up, last year’s Kyle Gordon is Wonderful , debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart.

“This may shock you to know, the comedy albums chart is not very competitive!” he told local fans packed into Tampa’s New World Music Hall on Sunday night. “There’s like, four people that do this, and three of them are me.”

The 34-year-old’s third effort, Kyle Gordon Is Everywhere, which dropped earlier this month, is a curated lesson in music history, narrated by Daniel Radcliffe and performed mostly by Gordon using fictional pseudonyms to present how he sees multiple genres and their histories. He even has the costumes to help him out; the effort has led recent to recent “Weird Al” Yankovic comparisons.

And look: It’s easy to slap the Weird Al label on anyone linked to comedy, even if it’s for something miniscule, like a style parody. But in Gordon’s case, the parallel is totally fair.

Following an opening set from his four-piece backing band Mojohand, full of high kicks and a metal version of “Twist and Shout,” a video of Gordon explained that he was about to teach a music history course surrounding rock, country, and world music. Class went into session around 8:45 p.m. when his first character, Kody Redwing entered, draped in a scarf and hat ala mid-70s “Doctor Who,” for the folk-pop-inspired “We Will Never Die,” which still sounds fresh out of a grossly overpriced millennial burger joint.

Between songs, Gordon quickly changed costumes in an effort to embody his cast of characters. He threw on a Jason Voorhees jersey (which we’ve definitely seen at Spirit Halloween before) and flipped us off multiple times during the nu-metal inspired “Crawl to Me,” on which he even assigned each half of the crowd parts to holler out, a la Olivia Rodrigo’s live versions of “expectations.” Once he reached rock’s formative days, Gordon portrayed Johnny Tornado by duckwalking in a leather jacket on “Every 1950s Rock N’ Roll Song (For Some Reason),” with its lyrics calling out Jerry Lee Lewis’ marriage to his barely-teenage cousin.

“It was weird the moment I started playing it. It never got better,” he bellowed afterward, triggering an in-character meltdown that saw him admit that the track is the one he soundchecks with. “That means we were here at one in the afternoon, this room is completely empty, and I have to sing that song making direct eye contact with the sound guy. And he’s like, ‘Who is this?! Who are we booking now?!’”

Gordon then turned to teen-idols, rocking a red varsity jacket and thick glasses for the doo-wop-inspired “Horniest Kid in School,” which gave him a chance to show off his pipes. Later, it was to the aughts for “Freak Out,” his tribute to the boy-crazy, Disney Channel teen movies of the early Obama years. He played one last teen idol on “My Life (Is the Worst Ever),” a shouty emo salute that sees him admit to keeping katanas in his rolly bag at school, and once receiving a hand-job while playing “Kingdom Hearts.”

There was a quick nod to non-bro country with the outlaw-style “Wanderin’” and “Girls Are the Best,” jokingly described as “country music for women,” and the last bit of the show centered around world music, which Gordon took as an opportunity to rip on Florida’s education system. “I don’t know if the Florida education system taught you this, but outside the United States, there are other countries!” he explained. “We scholars, when it comes to music, we just like to take all the very complex music from around the world, and kinda lump it all together. We call it ‘world music.’”

Gordon would then take on the role of a sleazy, horny Brazilian musician (“Ugliest Girl on the Beach”), an English-hating Irishman who kissed a guy on the head in the crowd during the final verse (“The Irish Drinking Song”), and of course, an American tourist who goes to Africa to discover his true self with inflatable animals behind him (“Mr. Jambo”).

In a world where it isn’t uncommon for comedians to whine about how hard it is to do comedy in 2026, it’s a breeze for someone like Gordon, who doesn’t take himself that seriously. He has no trouble pinpointing how he sees life’s absurdities, but in a healthy sense that makes his audience feel in on the joke rather than the butt of it. In short, don’t be surprised if he sells out a bigger room the next time he’s in town. It’s been a minute since we’ve seen a comedy act that could take the music scene by storm, but though it’s a niche category, Gordon’s material makes him an unquestionably promising figure.
